Multimodality in the English language classroom:

    A systematic review of literature

Literacy in the 21st century is now no longer regarded simply as the ability to use a language competently in a mono-cultural setting. Literacy today involves students knowing how to navigate across an increasingly complex communication landscape and to negotiate a range of contexts and patterns of intercultural meanings as well as the prevalence of multimodal texts.

Contemporary communication environment is characterised by multimodal meaning-making, that is the “multiplicities of media and modes”, as well as “increasing local diversity and global connectedness” (New London Group, 1996, p. 62) which necessitates a shift in the pedagogical approaches that are adopted by teachers. This is especially so in the digital age where a sole focus on language in literacy is no longer sufficient for the new workplace given that a revised sense of ‘competence’ is required. The recognition of social diversity also demands pedagogical approaches that engage with the transcultural and multicultural classroom. Issues of the day such as fake news and social justice concerns also need to be addressed in the literacy classroom.

Multimodality focuses on understanding how semiotic resources (visual, gestural, spatial, linguistic, and others) work and are organised. Multimodality in education adopts an expanded view of literacy to include the range of multimodal communicative practices which young people are involved in today's digital age. Multimodal pedagogies refer to the ways in which the teacher can design learning experiences using a range of multimodal resources. It involves teachers making design choices in the ways in which the curriculum content is expressed, arranged, and sequenced multimodally. Multimodal pedagogies also involve designing opportunities for students to explore and perform ideas and identities using a range of meaning-making resources. The teaching and learning activities often involve drawing from the students’ funds of knowledge and their lifeworld. With multimodal pedagogies, teachers orchestrate the learning process by weaving together a series of knowledge representations into a cohesive tapestry and in so doing make apt selection of meaning-making resources to design the students’ learning experience.

Based on Text I, mark the statements below as TRUE (T) or FALSE (F).

( ) The concept of literacy has become more complex over time.

( ) In today’s literacy classroom, the issue of fake news is to be avoided.

( ) Multimodal communicative practices aim at targets beyond language learning.

    TEXTO PARA AS QUESTÕES 78 A 80

We've been given no shortage of digital tools that should, in theory, help us work better, with more focus and efficiency, and connect us more easily with our colleagues. Instead, email, instant messaging, remote-meeting apps, work-flow and project-management software can feel like buckets with holes in the bottom, maddeningly inadequate to the task of keeping us from drowning in work. It's clear that something in the great digital-workplace experiment has gone wrong. Or maybe it's more accurate to say that it's still too early to expect that we would have figured out how to make things go right. "We're working now with new technologies that only emerged in the late '90s," says Cal Newport, a Georgetown computer-science professor. "The idea that we immediatelv figured out the best way to use them is ahistorical. Of course we haven't gotten it right yet."

    The Last Beatles Song

    1. Almost 50 years since Lennon recorded the earliest version of “Now and Then”, fans will
    2. soon be able to hear the last ever Beatles song. One final, stirring encore from the four Scousers
    3. who changed music forever. Working alongside “Get Back” director Peter Jackson’s team, the final
    4. version is due for worldwide release on Thursday 2 November. But as many Beatles fans will know,
    5. today’s gift is yesterday’s curse. The story of its release is a complicated saga in which only Paul
    6. McCartney and Ringo Starr will ever get to enjoy these last, bittersweet fruits of their labor, once
    7. John Lennon and George Harrison have passed.
    8. Despite Lennon having announced his intentions to quit the band in 1969, the Fab Four
    9. didn’t officially split until five years later. Lennon composed “Now and Then” in 1978, two years
    10. before he was shot and fatally wounded. Recording it using a boombox, he added it to a cassette
    11. tape labeled “For Paul”, which his widow Yoko Ono gave to McCartney when she found it among
    12. his possessions in 1994. The remaining Beatles released two of the songs on the cassette – “Free
    13. as a Bird” and “Real Love” – shortly after, aided by producer Jeff Lynne. But despite their attempts
    14. in 1995 to work on a version of “Now and Then”, they were forced to shelve the project due to the
    15. poor quality of the recording.
    16. Around two decades later, Jackson (best known for his epic fantasy trilogies “The Lord of
    17. the Rings” and “The Hobbit”) and dialogue editor Emile de la Rey were working on “The Beatles:
    18. Get Back docuseries”, using cutting-edge technology developed by his studio, WingNut Films, to
    19. de-mix the film’s mono soundtrack. This way, it became possible to separate the individual voices
    20. and unearth conversations that had previously never been heard before. McCartney wondered,
    21. could the same be achieved with the shelved recording he had long considered unfinished
    22. business?
    23. Jackson, de la Rey, and a dedicated sound team got to work, applying the same technique
    24. to separate Lennon’s vocal performance from the piano, while maintaining the integrity and clarity
    25. of the original recording. “There it was, John’s voice, crystal clear,” McCartney says, of the moment
    26. he heard Lennon’s clean vocals for the first time. “It’s quite emotional. And we all play on it, it’s a
    27. genuine Beatles recording. In 2023, to still be working on Beatles music, and about to release a
    28. new song the public haven’t heard, I think it’s an exciting thing.” He and Starr completed the song
    29. last year. “It was the closest we’ll ever come to having him back in the room so it was very
    30. emotional for all of us,” Starr says. “It was like John was there, you know. It’s far out.”
    31. This final chapter of The Beatles’ recorded history will also be marked by two collections —
    32. The Beatles’ 1962-1966 (The Red Album) and The Beatles 1967-1970 (The Blue Album). The
    33. release of “Now and Then” will be preceded by a 12-minute documentary, scheduled for a global
    34. premiere __ The Beatles’ YouTube channel __ 1 November __ 7.30 pm. The short film tells the
    35. full story behind the making of the song, and features exclusive footage __ McCartney, Starr,
    36. Harrison, Jackson, and Sean Lennon, who’s John’s son. The official music video will then be
    37. debuted __ Friday 3 November. “It was incredibly touching to hear them working together after
    38. all the years that dad had been gone. It’s the last song my dad, Paul, George and Ringo got to
    39. make together,” Sean Lennon says. “It’s like a time capsule and all feels very meant to be.”

    Text 7A1

Artificial intelligence still has difficulties processing requests in one language, without the additional complications of translation. Michael Housman, chief data science officer at RapportBoost.AI, explained that the ideal scenario for machine learning and artificial intelligence is something with fixed rules and a clear-cut measure of success or failure. He named chess as an obvious example. This happened faster than anyone anticipated because of the game’s very clear rules and limited set of moves. Housman elaborated, “Language is almost the opposite of that. There aren’t as clearly-cut and defined rules.”

I asked Dr. Jorge Majfud, Associate Professor of Spanish, at Jacksonville University, to explain why consistently accurate language translation has thus far eluded AI. He replied, “The problem is that considering the ‘entire’ sentence is still not enough.” He noted that sarcasm and irony only make sense within this widened context. Similarly, idioms can be problematic for automated translations.

Dr. Majfud warned, “We should be aware of the fragility of their ‘interpretation.’ Because to translate is basically to interpret, not just an idea but a feeling. Human feelings and ideas that only humans can understand — and sometimes not even we, humans, understand other humans.” He noted that cultures, gender, and even age can pose barriers to this understanding and also contended that an over-reliance on technology is leading to our cultural and political decline. Dr. Majfud mentioned that Argentinean writer Julio Cortázar used to refer to dictionaries as “cemeteries”. He suggested that automatic translators could be called “zombies”.

    Pollution

Thick black smoke curling out of smokestacks, horrible-tasting chemicals in your drinking water, pesticides in your food - these are examples of pollution. Pollution is any contamination of the environment which causes harm to the environment or the inhabitants of the environment. There are many kinds of pollution, and there are many pollutants. Some obvious kinds of pollution are pollution of the air, soil, and water. Some less obvious, or less salient kinds of pollution are radioactive, noise, light pollution, and green-house gasses.

Air pollution can be caused by particles, liquids, or gases that make the air harmful to breathe. There are two main types of air pollution: primary and secondary. Primary pollutants enter the air directly, like smoke from factories and car exhaust. Secondary pollutants are chemicals that mix together to pollute the air, like mixtures of emissions, or waste output, from vehicles and factory smoke that change to form more dangerous pollutants in the air and sunlight.

Soil pollution can be caused by pesticides, leakage..........................chemical tanks, oil spills, and other chemicals..........................get into the soil by dumping or accidental contamination. Soil pollution can also cause water pollution.............................underground water becomes contaminated by coming.............................contact with the polluted soil.

Water pollution can be caused by waste products, sewage, oil spills, and litter in streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans. Some scientists believe that water pollution is the largest cause of death and disease in the world, causing about 14,000 deaths in the world each day.

Radioactive pollution can be caused by leaks or spills of radioactive materials. These materials can come from medical sources, nuclear power plants, or laboratories which handle radioactive materials. Air, soil, and water can be polluted by radioactivity. It can cause damage to animals, both internally and externally, by eating, drinking, or touching it. It can cause birth defects and genetic problems. It can cause certain cancers and other deadly diseases.

Noise pollution can be caused by vehicle, aircraft, and industrial noise. It can also be caused by military or experimental sonar. Noise has health effects on people and animals. In people, it can cause high blood pressure, heart problems, sleep disturbances, and hearing problems. In animals, it can cause communication, reproductive, and navigation problems – they have difficulty finding their direction. Sonar has even caused whales to beach themselves because they respond to the sonar as if it were another whale.

Light pollution can be caused by advertising signs, stadium and city lighting, and other artificial lighting (like the light caused by night traffic). Artificial lighting has health effects on humans and animals. In people, it can cause high blood pressure and affect sleeping and waking rhythms and immunity. It might be a factor in some cancers, such as breast cancer. In animals, it can affect sleeping and waking rhythms, navigation, and reproduction.

In addition, greenhouse gases have caused a warming effect on the earth’s climate. The greenhouse gases are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and ozone. They are naturally–occurring gases in the atmosphere, but human activity has increased their concentration in the atmosphere. For example, the levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere have risen due to the burning of fossil fuels. The effect is a rise in global temperatures. The higher temperatures cause the melting of glaciers, a rise in the water level of oceans, and the disruption of both land and marine life, including that of humans. Although carbon dioxide is necessary for plants to survive, it is also considered to be a kind of pollution because high levels of carbon dioxide have caused the oceans to become more acidic.

It is not possible for anyone to predict the exact timing and effects of global pollution and global climate change brought about by pollution. There is general agreement by scientists that the global climate will continue to change, that the intensity of weather effects will continue to increase, and that some species of animals will become extinct. There is also general agreement, or consensus, that humans need to take steps to reduce emissions of waste products and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, make adaptations to the changes that are occurring, and figure out ways of reversing the trends of pollution and global warming.

    Read the text and answer questions 31, 32, 33, 34 and 35.

    Time-saving tips: lists

Making lists is __________. It makes you feel important - all those things to do. It dictates the shape of the immediate future, it calms you down (it’s O.K., it’s on a list somewhere), and it makes you feel good when you cross something off (list-making is standard practice in therapy for depression). It might even help you to get things done, too.

There are two types of people when it comes to making lists. Type A makes orderly lists, prioritizes, and calmly sets to work on them. Type B waits until panic sets in, grabs the nearest envelope and scribbles all over it, sighs with relief, and promptly loses it.

The more you have to do, the more you need a list, and few people with high-powered jobs get by without them. (...)

James Oliver, a psychologist, has created his own “timemanagement matrix.” He writes a list of things to do and then organizes the items into categories: things that have to be done right away, other things that it would be good to do today, things that are important but don’t have to be done immediately, and things that are less urgent but that he doesn’t want to forget. “Using categories to organize the world is the way the human mind works,” he says. “After that, you should put things into hierarchies of importance.” But he warns against the danger of Excessive List Syndrome. “If people get obsessed with making lists, it doesn’t work. They have too many categories and lose their capacity to prioritize.” (...)

Livro American Inside Out, Sue Kay & Vaughan Jones, Macmillan 2003.

According to the text, choose T for true and F for false. Then, choose the correct sequence.

( ) Making lists reminds you to do things and it’s soothing for the mind, too.

( ) You cannot cross something off a list if you haven’t fully completed the task.

( ) Therapists usually ask depressed patients to make lists as part of the treatment.

( ) People who don’t make lists have fewer chances of having an immediate future.

    Text 1A2-II

I have often thought how interesting a magazine paper might be written by any author who would—that is to say, who could—detail, step by step, the processes by which any one of his compositions attained its ultimate point of completion. Why such a paper has never been given to the world, I am much at a loss to say—but, perhaps, the authorial vanity has had more to do with the omission than any one other cause. Most writers—poets in especial—prefer having it understood that they compose by a species of fine frenzy—an ecstatic intuition—and would positively shudder at letting the public take a peep behind the scenes, at the elaborate and vacillating crudities of thought—at the true purposes seized only at the last moment—at the innumerable glimpses of idea that arrived not at the maturity of full view—at the fully-matured fancies discarded in despair as unmanageable—at the cautious selections and rejections—at the painful erasures and interpolations—in a word, at the wheels and pinions—the tackle for scene-shifting—the step-ladders, and demon-traps—the cock’s feathers, the red paint and the black patches, which, in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred, constitute the properties of the literary histrio.

I am aware, on the other hand, that the case is by no means common, in which an author is at all in condition to retrace the steps by which his conclusions have been attained. In general, suggestions, having arisen pell-mell are pursued and forgotten in a similar manner.

For my own part, I have neither sympathy with the repugnance alluded to, nor, at any time, the least difficulty in recalling to mind the progressive steps of any of my compositions, and, since the interest of an analysis or reconstruction, such as I have considered a desideratum, is quite independent of any real or fancied interest in the thing analysed, it will not be regarded as a breach of decorum on my part to show the modus operandi by which some one of my own works was put together. I select The Raven as most generally known. It is my design to render it manifest that no one point in its composition is referable either to accident or intuition—that the work proceeded step by step, to its completion, with the precision and rigid consequence of a mathematical problem.

Edgar Allan Poe. The Philosophy of Composition, 1846 (adapted).

The world’s oldest map of the night sky was amazingly accurate

Newly discovered fragments of 2,200-year-old star coordinates—once thought lost—reveal the incredible skill of the ancient astronomer Hipparchus.

Some 2,200 years ago, the Greek astronomer Hipparchus helped ___________ a new way of understanding the motions of the stars that persists to this day. By imagining Earth at the center of a celestial sphere, he used a coordinate system similar to latitude and longitude, which had recently been devised, to measure the precise positions of the stars.

“He was arguably the greatest ancient astronomer. At least the greatest known to us by name,” says Victor Gysembergh, a science historian at the French National Center for Scientific Research.

Many ancient Greek scientists believed that Earth was literally at the center of the universe, and the stars and other celestial bodies rotated around it, although a model with Earth orbiting the sun was ___________ in the 3rd century B.C. Although this geocentric model is incorrect, the concept, which Hipparchus used to create the first known star catalog, is still used by scientists to map objects in the sky.

Hipparchus’s star catalog is the oldest known attempt to document the positions of as many objects in the night sky as possible, and it was the first time that two coordinates were used to pinpoint each object’s location. But that original catalog is lost to time, and we know of it only thanks to the writings of later scientists such as Ptolemy, who created his own star catalog around 150 A.D. and attributed an earlier one to Hipparchus. Until now, the oldest evidence for stellar coordinates from Hipparchus was an 8th-century A.D. Latin translation of a poem about the constellations that includes the coordinates as a kind of annotation.

Gysembergh and his ___________ recently revealed even older evidence of star coordinates from Hipparchus in a 5th- or 6th-century A.D. Greek version of the same poem, Phenomena, originally written by the Greek poet Aratus in the 3rd century B.C. The poem, along with the accompanying star coordinates, had been erased from a reused medieval parchment and was recovered only through multispectral imaging, which uses different wavelengths of light to highlight the removed text.

The coordinates for the four stars to the farthest north, south, east, and west of the constellation Corona Borealis are included, though one of them could not be recovered from the manuscript. They were found to be accurate to within one degree of modern values—a remarkable achievement for someone working about 1,700 years before the invention of the telescope.

The Strange Saga of Jack Teixeira Reveals New Security Challenges

Moments before his arrest by armed FBI agents on Thursday, a helicopter from a local news station caught footage of 21-year-old Jack Teixeira reading a book on the sun-splashed back porch of his house in North Dighton, Mass. In his front yard, meanwhile, FBI agents in camouflage tactical gear were climbing out of an armored vehicle, tightening the straps of their bullet-proof vests and gripping long guns. The dramatic scene playing out in a sleepy, riverside exurb underscored the peculiarity of a case that exposed military documents, complicated relations with U.S. allies, and triggered national embarrassment. Intelligence leaks of this magnitude in the past have been the result of an alienated whistle-blower, double agent or successful spy operation. Now arguably the most damaging disclosure of U.S. government documents in a decade may have stemmed from the hubris of a junior enlisted member in the Massachusetts Air National Guard who shared them in a small online chat group called Thug Shaker Central.

The new “magnetic tentacle robot,” which is composed of magnetic discs and is roughly 2 millimeters and less than a-tenth-of-an-inch long, could eventually have its use expanded to help doctors more thoroughly investigate other organs, such as the human heart, kidney or pancreas.

The robot is still 5 to 10 years away from showing up in a clinical setting, researchers said, but the device comes on the heels of a fleet of other robotic innovations allowing doctors the ability to better scan a patient’s lungs for cancerous tissue. They are designed to ease a task doctors have long struggled with: reaching the inner recesses of the human body, for diagnostic and treatment purposes, without causing damage or using invasive procedures.

Doctors now use a medical device called a bronchoscope to examine a person’s lungs and airways. Normally 3.5 to 4 millimeters in diameter, the device enters through a patient’s nose or mouth and goes into the lung’s airways, called bronchioles. However, the bronchoscope’s width and rigidity limits how deep doctors can venture down a patient’s lungs in search of cancerous or other problematic tissues. Parts of the lungs are left unexamined, potentially causing harm.

The robot from the United Kingdom would be the first to not require manual guidance from a physician. Magnets mounted on robotic arms outside the patient would be used to help guide the device into the lungs. Once inserted into a patient, the magnets would help the robot move down a patient’s lungs autonomously, following a map of the patient’s lung network, which would be mapped out before the procedure. Once at its desired location, the robot could ultimately have the capability to take a tissue sample or deliver a clinical treatment. Depending on where a tumor is, this may be the only way to reach it successfully.

“I can imagine a future,” says Nitish V. Thakor, a professor of biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University, “where a full CAT scan is done of the lungs, and the surgeon sits down on a computer and lays out this navigation path of this kind of a snake robot and says: ‘Go get it.’ ” Despite that, Thakor said any autonomous robot would face an uphill climb being accepted by clinicians, as “people who do the clinical practice … guard their business very carefully until they get trained.”

Vocabulary learning strategies are one part of language learning strategies which in turn are part of general learning strategies (Nation, 2001). Language learning strategies encourage greater overall self-direction for learners. Self-directed learners are independent learners who are capable of assuming responsibility for their own learning and gradually gaining confidence, involvement and proficiency (Oxford, 1990). So is the case with vocabulary learning strategies. Thus, students need training in vocabulary learning strategies they need most. Research has shown that many learners do use more strategies to learn vocabulary especially when compared to such integrated tasks such as listening and speaking. But they are mostly inclined to use basic vocabulary learning strategies (Schmitt, 1997). This in turn makes strategy instruction an essential part of any foreign or second language program.

Instagram is made up of all photos and videos. There is the home page that showcases the posts from people you follow, an explore tab which offers posts from accounts all over the wold, and your own page, with a notification tab to show who likes and comments on your posts.

It has some downsides though. It is known to make many people feel insecure or down about themselves because the platform showcases the highlights of everyone's lives, while rarely showing the negatives. This can make one feel like their life is not going as well as others, contributing to the growing rates of anxiety or depression in many teens today. There is an underlying desire for acceptance through the number of likes or followers one has.
