The Library of Alexandria was the greatest library of the ancient world. Built around 280 BC, this library held as many as 700,000 books and scrolls. Think of all that ancient wisdom! Some of it was timeless and rare. Unfortunately much of it was burned.

......................appreciate the Library of Alexandria, you have to understand the rarity ............... books .............. that time. This library was built 1600 years .......... the invention of the printing press. Every text ........... the collection was handwritten and they were very expensive, though. It took a lot more work to make a book back then. The collection of texts at the Library of Alexandria was priceless in every sense.

Naturally, this library was located in Alexandria, a seaport in Egypt. Alexander the Great established this city in 331 BC. He built a very large empire that respected and preserved knowledge. The Library of Alexandria grew from this empire.

The rulers of Alexandria wanted their library to be a collection of all the world’s knowledge. That was a pretty big mission at the time. That’s a mission that Google and others are still pursuing today. At that time it was impossible to imagine trying to collect all the world’s knowledge before computers. The rulers of Alexandria took some extreme actions to pursue their mission.

They sent royal agents across the known world to collect texts. They gave these agents large sums of money and instructed them to buy any book that they could find. They preferred older texts, but they would buy books written by any author on any subject.

As time passed, the rulers of Alexandria became more aggressive in their mission. They searched for books on all ships that entered their ports. Alexandria was a trading hub and many ships came and went. Government agents seized every book that they found. They brought the books to the library and scholars would copy them. Sometimes the library kept the originals, but the copies were returned to the visitors

Another interesting acquisition involved the Athenians. Athens was a neighboring city-state to Alexandria in the Macedonian Empire. The Alexandrians wanted some classic Greek texts from the Athenians so they convinced the Athenians to lend them the original copies of these texts. The Alexandrians claimed that they would copy these texts. The Athenians received a tremendous sum to secure the loan. The Alexandrians gave them over 1,000 pounds of silver as collateral. They did copy the books, but they returned the copies, not the originals, to the Athenians. The Alexandrians happily forfeited the collateral to keep the original texts.

One ill-fated night in 48 BC, the Library of Alexandria burned. Roman general Julius Caesar was fighting a civil war against the Roman Senate. While engaged in battle, Caesar felt it wise to set fire to his own ships and burn the docks at Alexandria. The fire spread and destroyed the Library of Alexandria. The flames consumed many texts. Some texts may have been saved. The full-damage of the episode is unknown. The library was later rebuilt, but was thereafter less noted in history.

In the context of the text, the word ‘forfeited’, in: ‘The Alexandrians happily forfeited the collateral to keep the original texts.’, has its correct meaning in which alternative?

    Texto: TEACHING TEENAGERS

    Grace Bertolini

Teaching pre-teens and teens can be more than difficult. Regardless their language level, students at this age are learning so much personally and academically, that they can be under huge pressure. Usually, our young students have overflowing energy and are enthusiastic about the proposed activities at school. If our students happen to be adults, they will be concentrated in achieving the language milestones while providing and nurturing the class with their already acquired skills. Nevertheless, if your students are teens, this may vary completely, because even when most of them are bright and smart, they tend not to take much participation in some activities and, in some cases, even keep staring at you without an answer. A teenager does not want to be treated like a child. Besides, teens' attention spans are lengthening as a result of intellectual maturation; therefore, they want to have less contrail and more independence.

    Who are our "Tweens"?

They are the youngsters of approximately 1 O to 12 years of age. They are also called "pre-teenagers": i.e. They are too old to be a child, but too young to be called teenagers. They usually attend 5th, 6th and 7th grades. Have you ever felt frustrated by their lack of interest? We know that they need support, encouragement and a controlled learning environment that will help them reach their goals so that they can feel fulfilled. So how can we motivate tweens and teens?

When we think about a class of tweens and teenagers it includes students with different ranges of level of physical, emotional and cognitive abilities. Even their development may vary, for example, girls outrace boys in their physical development. In general, teens show a genuine desire to learn when the classroom environment is appropriate. However, tweens and teens' behavior is difficult to predict and in some cases there are certain factors and conditions which may generate disgust in them as they need to feel accepted by their group of friends and classmates, and this may influence the classroom. For example: teens would not want their peers to think they are too smart or even not clever enough when the teacher asks them something out loud. lt is very common for teens to feel extremely uncomfortable or shy when asked to express themselves in front of a class or when the teacher shows excessive knowledge on a topic the teens do not possess. Therefore, it is recommended that the teacher acknowledges the areas where teens seem to know more and use these to foster a sound relationship of mutual understanding and respect.

How were the first 'voice mails' sent? In envelopes

“Hello Mother, Dad, and Blanche,” a quiet voice says above the cracks and pops of an old vinyl record, which has clearly been played many times over. “How’s everything at home? I’m recording this from Dallas…from this very little place where there are pinball machines and many other things like that…”

The disc is small, seven inches across, dated ___________ 1954. The faded green label shows that the speaker’s name is “Gene,” the recording addressed to “Folks.” Gene suggests in his minute-long message that he is traveling—“seeing America”—and tells his family not to worry about him.

“I should complete my trip sometime around Thanksgiving. I hope you received my letter and I, in turn, hope to receive some of the letters that you sent me.”

This largely forgotten sound is one of the world’s early “voice mails.” During the first half of the 20th century, these audio letters and other messages were recorded largely in booths, pressed onto metal discs and vinyl records, and mailed in places all over the world. Best known today for playing music at home, record players were then being used as a means of _____________ over long distances.

The idea of transporting a person’s voice had _________ large in the human imagination for some three centuries before it was finally achieved with the invention of the phonograph in the late 19th century. Historical documents from the Qing Dynasty in 16th-century China suggest the existence of a mysterious device called the “thousand-mile speaker,” a wooden cylinder that could be spoken into and sealed, such that the recipient could still hear the reverberations when opening it back up.

The article is about Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and it discusses ChatGPT.

All the questions of your test will refer to different parts and aspects of the article.

Read the second part of the article. What do we learn from the experience of using ChatGPT?

Bing A.I., which I’ve had the chance to test-drive in recent weeks, is essentially ChatGPT hooked up to Microsoft’s search directory. Using it is like talking to a very powerful librarian whose purview is the breadth of the Internet. The old search experience is almost second nature to today’s Internet users: enter relevant keywords into Google, press Enter, and sift through the list of links that show up on the results page. Then click through to find the info you’re looking for. If you don’t find it, perhaps return to the Google Search page and tinker with your keywords to try again. With Bing A.I., Web sites are the source material, not the destination, and results are produced through what Danzico called a “co-creation process” between user and bot. I asked it which toaster Wirecutter recommended, and within a few seconds, and without ever leaving the Bing A.I. page, I had a digest of reputable devices. The chatbot wouldn’t tell me precisely which one to buy, however. “I can’t make decisions for you because I’m not a human,” it said.

In some ways, a Bing A.I. user has more agency than a user of Google Search. You communicate not in isolated keywords but in straightforward sentences, and you can narrow or refine your query results by asking the machine follow-ups. If you request an itinerary for a trip to Iceland, for instance, and then ask, “What time does the sun set there?” the bot will understand which “there” you’re referring to. But, in other ways, the Bing user is more limited and passive, encouraged to let the machine decide which information is worthwhile rather than doing any searching on their own. “It’s your travel guide, your bank, your confidante, your guide,” Danzico said. The “conversation mode” interface—a single chat box on top of a gentle color gradient—reflects that one-stop-shop objective. Where using Google Search sometimes feels like engineering the right equation to solve a problem, using Bing A.I. is a bit like a series of text-message conversations. It even punctuates answers with a smiling, blushing emoji: “I’m always happy to chat with you. ,” it told me.

China’s sitting on a goldmine of genetic data – and it doesn’t want to share

    By Jessie Yeung, CNN

Updated 7:54 PM EDT, Sat August 12, 2023

    Hong Kong

CNN - Better cancer treatments, advances in longevity, groundbreaking medicines and vaccines: these are just some of the potential prizes on offer in an emerging global race to advance the biosciences. And China’s been pouring billions of dollars into its efforts to become the preeminent force, with experts claiming its massive population of 1.4 billion people can provide a treasure trove of data.

Vast amounts of this data already exists in biobanks and research centers around the country – but the government is now launching a “national genetic survey” to collect information about and assert more oversight over these resources, say experts.

In recent years, authorities have also been tightening controls around foreign access to this data – in contrast to the many Western nations that have pledged to open up information for global sharing. The national survey and restrictions on foreign access are part of new regulations on China’s genetic resources, which came into effect in July.

However, some experts have warned that this genetic hoarding could make global research cooperation more difficult – and potentially backfire on China.

“The government wants to have a very tight hand in this area as they realize this has a huge economic potential, but … China needs international collaboration to realize that potential,” said Joy Y. Zhang, director of the Centre for Global Science and Epistemic Justice. Zhang attended consultation meetings during the drafting of the new regulations. “Currently you’re just having a gold mine right at your door, but you actually don’t know how to mine it,” she said.

    The biosciences boom

There’s a lot at stake: the genetic building blocks that make up our bodies could unlock discoveries with wide-ranging effects, from health care and the economy to national defense and biosafety.

In recent years, Chinese scientists and authorities have emphasized how genetic material could be useful in studying and treating diseases; developing pharmaceuticals and medical devices; and in better understanding how birth defects are formed or how genes contribute to a person’s longevity – particularly important given China’s looming demographic crisis as its birth rate falls and workforce ages.

And the country’s genetics could offer a “strategic resource and a treasure trove,” thanks to the sheer number of people and its “healthy and long-lived populations,” officials have claimed – though scientists caveat that each country’s genetic population is valuable in its own way.

Text 1- English as a global language

(Adapted from Teaching English Today: context and objectives, Holden & Nobre, 2018, p.03)

All languages reflect the culture of the countries and regions where they have developed and are used.

However, some languages are also used as a means of communication between a wide range of non-native speakers and contexts. In this way, the communication develops new priorities to reflect those contexts.

Today, English is probably the prime example of a global language. It is used to communicate in areas such as the workplace, science and technology, the arts and in the world of business. This is why so many parents are keen of their children to start learning it at an ever-earlier age. Students, too, realize that English in more than just a school subject: it is important for their own future success.

This realization can be used to your advantage as a teacher:

Your students should be aware that English is widely used among non-native speakers in a variety of contexts in their own environments. It is no longer just linked with going to the US or Britain.

They are more likely to be motivated if they feel they are being given appropriate materials and practice for their own needs, which is easier to do nowadays, since English is present almost everywhere.

In fact, you are part of this world where English is used, however imperfectly, in real life, as well as being part of that other, classroom world. This gives your role even more importance.

    The intercultural context

There are, then, clear practical and economic reasons why it is important for as many of your students as possible to feel positive about learning English, and ultimately, to feel confident about using it. However, there is also an equally important reason, which applies to all languages: their social function.

Learning and using another language can put people into contact, directly or indirectly, with others from different societies and cultures. It exposes them to different ways of thinking, different ways of communicating, different values. This, in turn, encourages them to think about their own culture, values and way of life. They realize there is not just one way of doing something, but many different ones.

In other words, as well as equipping learners with practical skills, learning a foreign language extends their horizons, which is one of the important aims of education in most countries.

Although the exercises are similar, participation and engagement increase when patients use the Wii. In a Johns

---Hopkins study, researchers incorporated Wii games into 22 patients’ physical therapy sessions. The patients said that they

10-enjoyed the challenge of the games and the change of pace in their exercises. Because the exercises are in a game format,

---Wii-Hab creates an inner competitiveness that drives patients to perform better.

This enjoyment and competitiveness also encourages patients to complete their home exercise programs. If they have

Tele-Rehab – Telemedicine has been an important development for the health care industry. With the ability to access

22-care on demand, patients are more likely to see a doctor when they need to, and there’s a higher likelihood that patients will

    Tenerife Airport disaster

The Tenerife Airport disaster occurred on March 27, 1977, when two Boeing 747 passenger jets collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport, on the Spanish Island of Tenerife. The collision occurred when KLM flight 4805 initiated its takeoff run while Pan Am Flight 1736 was still on the runway. The impact and resulting fire killed everyone on board KLM 4805 and most of the occupants of Pan Am 1736, with only 61 survivors in the front section of the aircraft. Resulting in 583 fatalities, the disaster is the deadliest accident in aviation history.

A terrorist incident at Gran Canaria Airport had caused many flights to be diverted to Los Rodeos, including the two aircraft involved in the accident. The airport quickly became congested with parked airplanes blocking the only taxiway and forcing departing aircraft to taxi on the runway instead. Patches of thick fog were drifting across the airfield; hence visibility was greatly reduced for pilots and the control tower.

The subsequent investigation by Spanish Authorities concluded that the primary cause of the accident was the KLM captain’s decision to take off in the mistaken belief that a takeoff clearance from air traffic control had been issued.

O texto seguinte servirá de base para responder às questões de 21 a 25.

PUCKER UP I'm a dermatologist - you've been using lip balm all wrong - here's why your pout is still chapped

(1º§)YOU might be reaching for your lip balm more and more through these winter months. But are your lips still sore and chapped, no matter how much of the stuff you slather on? According to dermatology experts, the type of balm you put on your pout might be more important than the amount.

(2º§)Dr. Mona Gohara, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at the Yale School of Medicine, and Dr. Brendan Camp, a dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York, told TODAY why some lip balms could do more harm than good.

(3º§)To start with, they discussed why your lips might be chapped in the first place. The cold weather can wreak havoc on them as the skin is very thin, so they're more likely to dry out, Dr Gohara said. Meanwhile, Dr Camp noted that the delicate skin of your pout can easily be irritated by ingredients in skincare or food, yeast or bacteria, and even enzymes in saliva.

(4º§)You might also not be giving them enough love: lot's of people forget about their lips when they're moisturising their face. But if your lips are dry and chapped not long after you apply your balm, you just might be using the wrong kind.

(5º§)Four things to avoid in a lip balm:

    1.Tingly balms

    2. Fragrances

    3. Flavouring agents

    4. Dyes

(6º§)Dr Camp said these might cause allergic contact dermatitis, a type of eczema triggered by contact with a particular substance. And if your lips are dry, cracked, red, scaly and itchy, you might have developed a sensitivity to an ingredient in your lip balm, he added. Moral of the story, check your lip balm ingredients.

(7º§)Since you're doing that, there are a few ingredients that will help hydrate your pout. Dr Camp said you want to look for ingredients that will help trap water in the skin while keeping it moisturized for a long period of time. "Ingredients like beeswax, olive oil, castor oil, coconut oil, and shea butter are often used for this purpose," he said.

(8º§)You should also be wearing a salve with SPF to protect your lips from the sun. Meanwhile, Dr Gohara said that your ideal balm will have a combination of humectants (like hyaluronic acid and glycerin), which draw moisture into the skin, and occlusives (such as shea butter and mineral oil), which lock moisture in.

(9º§)The NHS recommended you use one containing petroleum jelly or beeswax. It said: "Try a few different lip balms if one is not working for you - some people may be sensitive to some fragrances, dyes or cosmetic ingredients."

(10º§)As long as you're using the right type of balm, Dr Gohara said you can apply it multiple times a day. According to Dr Camp, it's best to put on lip balm once in the morning and once before bed. There are other ways of preventing dry lips too.

(11º§)Lisa Borg, skin specialist and nutritionist at the Pulse Light Clinc, said the best thing you can do is drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Preferably quality water as opposed to dehydrating coffee and fizzy drinks, she noted.

(12º§)Lisa also recommended eating foods that simulate saliva production, such as apples, cucumbers, tomatoes, courgettes, watermelon, lemons, and crunchy fibrous vegetables like carrots and celery. Meanwhile, the NHS said you should wash your hands before applying lip balm and cover your lips with a scarf when you're outside in cold weather. If you're outdoors, use a balm with SPF 15 or more every two hours, it added.

(13º§)Common causes of dry lips: cold weather, dry air or wind; damage from the sun; dehydration; a lip injury; allergies; and lack of vitamins and minerals. If you have sore or dry lips, you should avoid: picking or biting any flaky skin on your lips - this can slow down healing; licking dry or cracked lips - this can make them sore; and sharing lip balms with other people - this can spread germs.
