The beginning of a new school year can bring out many emotions in children. While some children are excited to reunite with their peers, others may feel nervous and afflicted about meeting a new teacher. Some children may be eager for playground time and others may fear feeling abandoned among unfamiliar children.

Children who are shy are particularly likely to feel uneasy as the new school year approaches. Shyness is characterized by nervousness and self-consciousness in new social settings, around new people or when being the centre of attention. For shy children, unfamiliarity and unpredictability can feed into feelings of fear and anxiety and be very difficult to deal with. For example, a shy child may wonder if their new teacher will be nice, if they will know the other children in their class, if they will know how to find their classroom and where their desk will be. In fact, anxiety due to everyday, ordinary school situations has been recorded in a number of studies worldwide.

When facing uncertainty, the shy child is often predisposed to make negative predictions. For example, they may predict that their new teacher will not be nice or they will not know anyone else in their class. However, eliminating some of the “unknowns” for shy children may help ease some feelings of anticipatory nervousness and anxiety. Among others, it would be helpful to show the child their school (or if possible, classroom) and practise how to get there, or if possible, meet school staff or teachers in advance.

Shy children may seem slow to warm up in new social situations if compared to their more outgoing peers. By exposing the shy child to their new environment, it is likely they will feel more at ease with the approach of the new school year.

    Teaching dedication has its rewards

Google News, Thursday, June 16, 2021

Teaching methods keep changing with the times, ......................... the blackboard of the old days ................. electronic teaching today. Mr. Kam, physics instructor ....................the Chinese University of Hong Kong, is one of those who has changed .................. the times.

Mr. Kam employs a two-pronged approach. First, he uses multimedia teaching materials during lectures. Second, he arranges internships for undergraduates. These can take the form of learning assistantships at the university or teaching assistantships at secondary schools, and also there’s always the odd science project at the Space Museum.

The initiatives have earned him the Faculty Exemplary Teaching Award 2020. A CUHK alumnus, he is grateful for the chance to teach at the university after earning his doctoral degree there. His teaching position actually represents the fulfillment of a dream, for the status of professors during his days as a university student was extremely high and he could meet them only during lectures.

After being a teacher for 10 years, Mr. Kam has found no apparent regression in the learning abilities of students, but he believes teachers should not just force knowledge on students - they have to pay careful attention to their needs too.

The multimedia materials that Mr. Kam uses to illustrate his area of interest includes animation and video clips. He encourages students to read popular astronomy magazines and share any note-worthy content they find. Mr. Kam also gets his undergraduates to help prepare students sitting for physics papers in public exams or to help out on research projects undertaken by meteorological officers at the observatory.

He also arranges for his undergraduates to teach students from other faculties during physics liberal studies classes through talks and star-gazing expeditions. Such responsibilities serve two greater purposes.

First, undergraduates become even more motivated to learn when they find out they have to guide other students. Second, physics students are, unlike arts students, not at their best when called upon to express themselves. Acting as assistants allows them to practice their skills and build up their self- confidence.

I asked Mr. Kam what he found most satisfying in teaching.

And the answer is obvious. It is the deep friendship he forms with students. Mr. Kam says many former students still come back to see him occasionally despite being busy parents. He draws considerable satisfaction from seeing his students grow into mature adults.

For Mr. Kam, the best teachers will never find extracurricular activity a burden because the good work that is done today plants the seed for future generations.

Which of the following statements can be inferred from the text?

    1. Mr. Kam has a master degree in physics at the Hong Kong University.

    2. One of Mr. Kam’s pronged approach is the use of multimedia teaching materials during lectures.

    3. Popular astronomy magazines are used by Mr. Kam’s students to encourage them to buildup their self confidence.

    4. Undergraduate students can take assistantships by teaching at secondary school.

    5. The most important motivation, that makes undergraduates to learn, is when they find out they have to guide other students.

More More More: What Is Money Dysmorphia?

Do you ever worry that you don't have enough money, even though your bank account suggests you're doing fine? You might be experiencing "money dysmorphia." This is a term for when a person has a distorted view of their financial situation — particularly when a wealthy person believes they don't have enough money to be secure. The idea is similar to body dysmorphia, where a person agonizes about flaws they perceive in their body, even if they are not noticeable to others.

American lawyer and financial expert Ali Katz may have been the first to use the term, having written about money dysmorphia extensively in 2016. But it wasn't until late 2023 that it started trending. Because, as it tums out, the feeling can be pretty common — especially among young people.

In August 2023, Bloomberg published the results of a survey of over 1,000 Americans making over \$175,000 a year. And while earning this much would put these people among the 10% richest in the country, a quarter of them said they felt "very poor," "poor or that they were just managing to get by.

In addition, a December 2023 survey for Intuit Credit Karma found that, out of 1,006 Americans, 29% experienced money dysmorphia — which the survey defined as "having a distorted view of one's finances that could lead them to make poor decisions.” That figure rose to 41% among millennials, who are usually defined as those born between 1981 and 1996. And it was 43% among Generation Z, typically considered to have been born between 1997 and 2012.

Some believe social media is to blame. With Instagram and TikTok full of influencers flaunting lavish lifestyles, it's understandable that young people might feel insecure about their own financial situations. And as well as causing stress, money dysmorphia might make people stay in jobs they don't like, or choose work over spending time with their families.

Speaking to Business Insider, Katz said it's important to actually calculate how much is enough for you — and "know the difference between what you need and what you want."
