TEXT I – Tema: O papel da Língua Inglesa na BNCC

IS THE BNCC REALLY GOING TO AFFECT MY CLASSES?

    (by Lúcia Rodrigues Alves)

1 Everywhere we look we find people talking about the BNCC and its effect on regular

2 education in Brazil. However, I wonder if everybody is aware of the real consequences we

3 will have to deal in mainstream schools as well as language centers because of it. Many

4 teachers who I have talked to claim that the BNCC should only be the concern of publishing

5 houses, as if the new curriculum base would only affect syllabus. We might be mislead into

6 thinking that, as teachers, all we have to do is follow the syllabus, and make minor adaptations

7 to a coursebook which is chosen for us. Other teachers say that they work at language centers

8 and the BNCC was designed for basic education. Therefore, they think they do not have to

9 worry about it since English schools have to worry just about the teaching of English and we

10 do not play a role where the BNCC should be taken into consideration.

11 My experience has shown me that, before stating an opinion about the relevance of the BNCC,

12 we have to try going deep into it so we have more tools to get to our opinions before jumping

13 to conclusions which might be misleading. When you look at the document […] we will see

14 that it has almost 500 pages, among which only a small bit is devoted to the English language

15 teaching, less than 20 pages. It is quite common to skip everything and go straight to these 18

16 pages and disconsider everything which is stated before. This might be a very dangerous

17 movement since you might, by doing so, make the mistake of simply comparing what you

18 have in your current coursebook and what comes in those 18 pages and have a checking

19 attitude: just comparing the syllabus you have and what is there, or what is missing. However,

20 this approach to the BNCC might be quite superficial and pointless.

    21

    […]

    In conclusion…

22 As a conclusion, I invite all my fellow colleagues of profession to give some thought on the

23 BNCC. There are many problems to point out throughout this document and many areas in

24 which the how-to-do-it is blurred and unclear. The challenges to face are enormous, specially

25 in terms of the necessary teacher development which is the base for the implementation of

26 this new curriculum base. Perhaps, the best we could do for the time being would be to locate

27 the positive points that may improve our teaching practices and include these items little by

28 little in what we do in the classroom. It is with the union of many small changes that education

29 in Brazil might act in order to become something of value to help us create the kind of nation

30 we need our country to be. During the 70’s, Paulo Freire already stated: “É preciso, sobretudo,

Two Teens Volunteering on an Archaeological Dig in Israel Uncovered Solid-Gold Treasure Buried More Than 1,000 years ago

The coins date to the Abbasid Caliphate, which ruled 1,100 years ago during the Golden Age of Islam.

A pair of 18-years-olds recently made an unexpected discovery when they unearthed a cache of 424 rare golden coins while volunteering at an archaeological dig conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority. Such a large amount of gold is, it goes without saying, extremely valuable; it had been buried inside a clay jar for safekeeping more than 1,00 years ago.

"I dug in the ground and when I swept away the soil, I saw what looked like very thin leaves" one of the teenagers, Oz Cohen, said in a statement. "When I looked again I saw that they were gold coins. It was really exciting to find such a special and ancient treasure."

In addition to full dinar gold coins, the hoard also contains 270 smaller fragments, reports Haaretz. In 9th century Israel, cutting gold and silver coins to make small change in lieu of cheaper bronze and copper currency that had become scarce was common practice, according to Robert Kool, a coin expert with the Israel Antiquities Authority.

The 24-carat pure gold coins date to the Abbasid period, around 1,100 years ago. The Abbasid Caliphate was a Muslim dynasty during what is known as the Golden Age of Islam, ruling over Persia and North Africa from its capital in Bagdhad.

But the coins also include a fragment of a gold solidus minted in Constantinople featuring Theophilos, the Byzantine emperor from 829 to 842 − possible evidence of trade and cultural exchange between two ancient empires. It is the only coin of its kind find in Israel to date.

"Finding gold coins, certainly in such a considerable quantity, its extremely rare, said Liat Nadav-Ziv and Elie Haddad, who oversaw the dig, in a statement. "The person who buried this treasure 1,100 years ago must have expected to retrieve it, and even secured the vessel with a nail so it would not move."

The Israel Antiquities Authority is keeping the exact location of the discovery − at a dig conducted ahead of planned construction in Yavneh, south of Tel Aviv in central Israel − under wraps to avoid looting from would-be treasure hunters. The cache weighs 845 grams, or close to two pounds. By weight alone, that much gold would be worth \$52,618 today.

    TEXTO III

Nobel Prize in Chemistry Awarded to 3 Scientists for Exploring the Nanoworld1

Three pioneering scientists, Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus, and Alexei I. Ekimov, have been honored with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their groundbreaking work on quantum dots, which are semiconductor particles small enough to significantly alter their electron behavior. These quantum dots, comprising only a few thousand atoms, have applications ranging from enhancing LED lights to potential advancements in solar cells and quantum information encryption.

Semiconductors, essential in powering our modern electronics, traditionally consist of large molecular-level crystals. However, quantum dots are vastly smaller. To provide perspective, the Nobel Foundation likened the size difference between a quantum dot and a soccer ball to that between a soccer ball and the Earth.

These nanoscale dots are now utilized in LED lights to refine color and in televisions to improve resolution. Additionally, they hold potential in the biomedical field, such as in cancer tissue removal. Despite initial skepticism regarding the feasibility of creating such minuscule particles, this year’s laureates prevailed. Their achievement, particularly Bawendi’s method for crafting specific size, high-quality nanoparticles, has propelled technological applications like QLED screens and various imaging in biochemistry and medicine.

However, the announcement of this year's laureates was surrounded by unusual circumstances. Before the official statement from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Swedish media sources leaked the information, citing an email mistakenly sent early from the Academy.

About the winners: Dr. Bawendi, a professor at MIT and a former postdoc under Dr. Brus, was born in France. Dr. Brus, a professor emeritus at Columbia University, was born in the U.S. Dr. Ekimov, once the chief scientist at Nanocrystals Technology in New York, was born in the former Soviet Union.

Their achievements in the realm of nanotechnology have enabled the exploration of distinct properties of extremely small matter, and have had profound implications in various technological domains. Their efforts in the 1980s, which led to the creation of quantum dots, needed further refinement before technological applications could be realized. Their work is regarded as monumental in bridging theoretical concepts with real-world applications. According to the American Chemical Society’s president, Judith Giordan, their discoveries are not just of academic interest but aim to benefit humanity at large.

Upon winning the prize, Dr. Bawendi expressed surprise and honor, emphasizing the significance of sharing the award with his mentor, Dr. Brus. Other notable winners this year include Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for their contributions to Covid-19 vaccine development in the Physiology or Medicine category, and Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, and Anne L’Huillier in Physics.

    Mental Health Conditions

Mental illnesses are disorders, ranging from mild to severe, that affect a person’s thinking, mood, and/or behavior. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly one-in-five adults live with a mental illness. Many factors contribute to mental health conditions, including: Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry, life experiences, such as trauma or abuse and family history of mental health problems.

Tips for Living Well with a Mental

Health Condition Having a mental health condition can make it a struggle to work, keep up with school, stick to a regular schedule, have healthy relationships, socialize, maintain hygiene, and more. However, with early and consistent treatment—often a combination of medication and psychotherapy—it is possible to manage these conditions, overcome challenges, and lead a meaningful, productive life. Today, there are new tools, evidence-based treatments, and social support systems that help people feel better and pursue their goals. Some of these tips, tools and strategies include:

    1. Stick to a treatment plan. Even if you feel better, don’t stop going to therapy or taking medication without a doctor’s guidance. Work with a doctor to safely adjust doses or medication if needed to continue a treatment plan.
    2. Keep your primary care physician updated. Primary care physicians are an important part of long-term management, even if you also see a psychiatrist.
    3. Learn about the condition. Being educated can help you stick to your treatment plan. Education can also help your loved ones be more supportive and compassionate.
    4. Practice good self-care. Control stress with activities such as meditation or tai-chi; eat healthy and exercise; and get enough sleep.
    5. Reach out to family and friends. Maintaining relationships with others is important. In times of crisis or rough spells, reach out to them for support and help.
    6. Develop coping skills. Establishing healthy coping skills can help people deal with stress easier.
    7. Get enough sleep. Good sleep improves your brain performance, mood and overall health. Consistently poor sleep is associated with anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.

(1º§) Embedded within a dramatic landscape at the meeting point between the Peruvian Andes and the Amazon Basin, the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is among the greatest artistic, architectural and land use achievements anywhere and the most significant tangible legacy of the Inca civilization. Recognized for outstanding cultural and natural values, the mixed World Heritage property covers 32,592 hectares of mountain slopes, peaks and valleys surrounding its heart, the spectacular archaeological monument of "La Ciudadela" (the Citadel) at more than 2,400 meters above sea level. Built in the fifteenth century Machu Picchu was abandoned when the Inca Empire was conquered by the Spaniards in the sixteenth century. It was not until 1911 that the archaeological complex was made known to the outside world.

(2º§) The approximately 200 structures making up this outstanding religious, ceremonial, astronomical and agricultural centre are set on a steep ridge, crisscrossed by stone terraces. Following a rigorous plan the city is divided into a lower and upper part, separating the farming from residential areas, with a large square between the two. To this day, many of Machu Picchu's mysteries remain unresolved, including the exact role it may have played in the Incas' sophisticated understanding of astronomy and domestication of wild plant species.

(3º§) The massive yet refined architecture of Machu Picchu blends exceptionally well with the stunning natural environment, with which it is intricately linked. Numerous subsidiary centres, an extensive road and trail system, irrigation canals and agricultural terraces bear witness to longstanding, often on-going human use. The rugged topography making some areas difficult to access has resulted in a mosaic of used areas and diverse natural habitats. The Eastern slopes of the tropical Andes with its enormous gradient from high altitude "Puna" grasslands and Polylepis thickets to montane cloud forests all the way down towards the tropical lowland forests are known to harbour a rich biodiversity and high endemism of global significance. Despite its small size the property contributes to conserving a very rich habitat and species diversity with remarkable endemic and relict flora and fauna.

TEXT II – Tema: Variação linguística no ensino-aprendizagem de inglês

    INTERNATIONAL VARIETIES OF ENGLISH

1 The most familiar way to classify the varieties of English around the world was developed by

2 Kachru (1985) and looks like this:

    3 To explain a little:

    4 the inner circle

5 consists, as the diagram shows, of the traditional bases of English and their speakers

6 provide the standards against which other varieties are judged. It is from these speech

7 communities, in other words, that the target norms of the teaching of English are derived.

8 The majority of the populations of inner-circle nations are native speakers of English.

    9 the outer circle

10 represents areas in which English is widely spoken as a second language alongside

11 indigenous languages and where the standards of production may vary quite considerably

12 from the standards and norms of speakers in the inner circle. In many of the nations in

13 this circle English is an official language and even where it is not, it is used widely in

14 government, administration and commerce. There are few native speakers of English in

15 these nations although there are many who are functionally bilingual.

    16 the expanding circle

17 represents areas in which English is not spoken widely and in which there are few native

18 speakers of English. Use of English is confined to those who have learned it as a foreign

19 language. Usually, the norms at which the teaching of the language is aimed in these

20 settings are those of inner circle countries (predominately the UK and the USA).

21 The importance of all this is the concept of norms of the language: 1.The inner circle countries

22 are norm-setting nations and it is against their standards that measures of correctness are

23 established. 2.The outer circle countries are norm-developing areas in which local standards

24 are being set and developed often independently of the inner circle countries. 3.The expanding

25 circle comprises countries which are norm dependent, usually on the standards developed and

    26 maintained in inner-circle nations.
