    TEXT:

10 Ways We Can Build Better Rapport With Our Students Tyler Harm

    October 6, 2019

As a teacher it is easy to get caught up in the curriculum, planning, and grading. We sometimes lose sight that a human connection could be the main reason that a student chooses to come to school each day. Try to make meaningful conversations with students. This is a mistake that I sometimes make and try to avoid if possible. I often have students come into my room for lunch or come and hang out in the morning before school starts. During these times of the day, I’m also working on paperwork, grading, and setting up the classroom for the day. Try and model active listening skills with your students. I have often been writing an email at the same time as I have been talking with a student and I find that I am not really paying attention to what they are telling me.

Many students enjoy coming to their teacher to talk about different things, while other students are harder to reach. Students will share exciting things from the weekend, tragedies that happened to their family, or problems they’re having with their friends. They trust you enough to come to you with the good things and troubles that they’re having. Take the time even though you won’t be able to finish your work right then to listen to them. They will appreciate it and see you as a trusting adult who cares for them. If you must get your email or lesson plan typed up, kindly ask the student to wait a minute or so until you finish what you are doing so you can give them your full attention. Below are ten other ways that we can build better rapport with our students, especially those that are hard to reach.

10 Ways to Build Positive Relationships with Students

In order to build a positive rapport with a student, you have to intentionally carve out time for the student. If you are busily running around the room and trying to talk with the student it, you will not be fully engaged and it will come off as insincere. Once you have the time carved out for your specific student(s), here are some ways to build rapport with your students:

    • Smile– Be genuinely happy to see your students each day. This could be the thing that brightens their day!

    • Be Respectful- Give students time and space to problem solve issues if needed. Let them know you are there for them when they are ready to talk.

    • Know their Hobbies and Interests- Take some time, even just in passing to talk about what your students like to do for fun. Share what you like too!

    • Play a Game– Go out for recess or spend a few minutes playing games with students. They love having their teachers playing with them!

    • Lunch with a Student- Invite a student or two in for lunch sometime. This provides a quiet time to get to know your students better.

    • Greet Students at the Door- You can tell a lot by a student’s body language when they enter the room. Stand outside of the door and shake their hand in the morning or at each class period.

    • Attend Student’s Activities– Get a sports or performance schedule from your students who are in extra-curricular activities. They love it when you come to an event!

    • Look for the Positive in Your Students- Try to find one or two affirmations to say to your students each day. The ones who really struggle will need to be built up daily!

    • Be Sincere- When you are talking with students, put down your computer, and be an active, sincere listener. Students will know when you are not being genuine.

    • Believe in Your Students- Tell them, especially when things are hard, that you believe in them. Show them as well by being there for your students when they need extra support with an assignment or a listening ear for them during a tough time.

We all want to have great relationships with our students. Sometimes the busyness of our work and teaching can be a barrier to building rapport with our students. As I return to school this week, I will work harder at becoming more intentional with more of my students. Building up your students and taking time to be there for them will bring a lifetime of great results.

    October 9th 1942

“Today I have nothing but dismal and depressing news to report. Our many Jewish friends and acquaintances are being taken away in droves. The Gestapo is treating them very roughly and transporting them in cattle cars to Westerbork, the big camp in Drenthe to which they’re sending all the Jews. Miep told us about someone who’d managed to escape from there. It must be terrible in Westerbork. The people get almost nothing to eat, much less to drink, as water is available only one hour a day, and there’s only one toilet and sink for several thousand people. Men and women sleep in the same room, and women and children often have their heads shaved. Escape is almost impossible; many people look Jewish, and they’re branded by their shorn heads. If it’s that bad in Holland, what must it be like in those faraway and uncivilized places where the Germans are sending them? We assume that most of them are being murdered. The English radio says they’re being gassed. Perhaps that’s the quickest way to die. I feel terrible. Miep’s accounts of these horrors are so heartrending… Fine specimens of humanity, those Germans, and to think I’m actually one of them! No, that’s not true, Hitler took away our nationality long ago. And besides, there are no greater enemies on earth than the Germans and Jews.”

After years of inattention, the whole world has just awaken to what is happening in the Amazon. “Save the rain forest” is the cry of conservationists, politicians, and rock stars. The movement has already sparked a confrontation between rich industrials nations, which are new converts to the environmental cause, and the poorer nations of the Third World which consider outside interference as an assault on their sovereignty. Scientists think that destruction of the Amazon could lead to climatic chaos. Because of the huge volume of clouds it generates, the Amazon system plays a major role in the way the sun’s heat is distributed around the globe. Any disturbance of this process could produce unpredictable effects. As an American Senator has just said: “The devastation is unbelievable. It’s one of the great tragedies of all history”. TEXTO IV

From Rockets to Ball Bearings, Pentagon Struggles to Feed War Machine: The flow of arms to Ukraine has exposed a worrisome lack of production capacity in the United States that has its roots in the end of the Cold War.

    By Eric Lipton

    March 24, 2023,

    Disponível em: www.nytimes.com

WASHINGTON — The Navy admiral had a blunt message for the military contractors building precision-guided missiles for his warships, submarines and planes at a moment when the United States is dispatching arms to Ukraine and preparing for the possibility of conflict with China.

“Look at me. I am not forgiving the fact you’re not delivering the ordnance we need. OK?” Adm. Daryl Caudle, who is in charge of delivering weapons to most of the Navy’s East Coast-based fleet, warned contractors during an industry gathering in January. “We’re talking about warfighting, national security, and going against a competitor here and a potential adversary that is like nothing we’ve ever seen. And we can’t dillydally around with these deliveries.”

His open frustration reflects a problem that has become worryingly apparent as the Pentagon dispatches its own stocks of weapons to help Ukraine hold off Russia and Washington warily watches for signs that China might provoke a new conflict by invading Taiwan: The United States lacks the capacity to produce the arms that the nation and its allies need at a time of heightened superpower tensions.

Industry consolidation, depleted manufacturing lines and supply chain issues have combined to constrain the production of basic ammunition like artillery shells while also prompting concern about building adequate reserves of more sophisticated weapons including missiles, air defense systems and counter-artillery radar.

The Pentagon, the White House, Congress and military contractors are all taking steps to address the issues.

Procurement budgets are growing. The military is offering suppliers multiyear contracts to encourage companies to invest more in their manufacturing capacity and is dispatching teams to help solve supply bottlenecks. More generally, the Pentagon is abandoning some of the costcutting changes embraced after the end of the Cold War, including corporate-style just-in-time delivery systems and a drive to shrink the industry.

At the beginning of March 1898, a Belgian research ship became stuck in the ice of Antarctica’s Bellingshausen sea. The Belgica ship and its crew — which included Roald Amundsen, who later became the first man to reach the South Pole — remained there for a year. Scientists aboard Polarstern, a German research ship currently in the same place, have a very different view: in the beginning of February 2023, the expedition leader said he had never seen the sea so destituted of ice. In 2023, on February 13th, sea ice across the Antarctic as a whole reached 1.91 million square kilometres (m km2), the lowest level since satellite records began in 1979.

The world is now, on average, 1.0-1.3 ºC hotter than it was before the Industrial Revolution. However, that change has not occurred evenly: the poles are warming faster than regions in the middle of the globe.

Sea-ice extent around Antarctica was relatively stable until 2014. It has been declining sharply since then. One study by a climatologist at America’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) considers that between 2014 and 2017 Antarctic sea ice receded three times as quickly as during any comparable period in the Arctic. Antarctic sea ice shrinks to a minimum during late February and early March, during the southern hemisphere’s summer. It hit record lows in 2022 and again now in 2023.

These changes have prompted much research into how global warming is affecting Antarctica. The biggest concern is over the enormous West Antarctic ice sheet, which is smaller but less stable than its eastern counterpart. Scientists say that it risks collapse if it melts beyond a certain point, which could result in a global sea-level rise of up to three metres. It is unlikely to happen any time soon, but increasing evidence of instability in Antarctica’s ice sheets is cause for concern.

Brazilian Indigenous groups protest as lawmakers approve bill limiting recognition of ancestral lands

(1º§) Brazil's lower house of Congress on Tuesday night approved a bill that would limit the recognition of ancestral lands in a vote met by protests from Indigenous groups.

(2º§) The bill, known as PL 490/2007, would strip the environment and Indigenous people ministries of some powers, weakening their oversight__ environmental protections and the demarcation of Indigenous lands.

(3º§) The proposed legislation, which passed by 283 votes to 155, still requires approval from the Senate and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

(4º§) Ahead of the vote, Indigenous groups blocked a highway just outside the country's largest city Sao Paulo. Protesters burned tires, fired arrows and threw objects __ the riot and military police, who used water cannons and tear gas in return.

(5º§) Indigenous groups from across the country also planned protests in the capital Brasilia, where Lula da Silva is meeting with South American leaders.

(6º§) The president could still veto the bill, Reuters reports, but Congress could have enough support to override the move.

(7º§) "PL490 has been approved by the Chamber: a serious attack on indigenous peoples and the environment," Sônia Guajajara, the Indigenous Peoples minister, tweeted late on Tuesday.

(8º§) "We keep fighting for life. Still in the Senate, we will dialogue to avoid negotiating our lives in exchange for profit and destruction. We will not give up!."

(9º§) Lula da Silva has promised to repair the damage to the Amazon caused during the tenure of his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro. A surge in invasions and illegal extraction of natural resources in protected Indigenous lands were reported under the far-right former leader's time in office.

(10º§) Last month, Lula da Silva recognized six Indigenous territories, Reuters reports, fulfilling part of his campaign promise to protect Indigenous lands from being taken for farming, gold mining and logging in the Amazon.

(11º§) But Lula da Silva has had to face a hostile Congress, which approved expediting the bill's review process last week.

(12º§) While the bill does not impact fully recognized Indigenous territories, it would affect territories that are under claim.

(13º§) Rights groups warn that the bill would "prevent Indigenous communities from obtaining title of their lands if they were not physically present on them on October 5, 1988, the day Brazil's current Constitution was adopted," writes Human Rights Watch.

(14º§) "Indigenous peoples who were expelled from their territory before October 1988 and cannot prove they were involved in an ongoing dispute over their claim on that date would not be able to secure legal recognition of their lands," Human Rights Watch wrote in a statement.

(15º§) "Choosing an arbitrary cutoff date and refusing to recognize ancestral lands claimed after that date is not __ line with international standards," it added.

(16º§) If the bill passes, it could tarnish Lula da Silva's climate ambitions. "If Lula loses this battle in Congress, it will represent yet another political defeat for his administration and display the conservative force he faces," Bruna Santos, director of the Wilson Center's Brazil Institute, told CNN.

    TEXTO:

    The Importance of Four Skills

Any language is difficult and easy. Language serves many purposes.Absence of language is mere dearth of communication. The role that language plays is immense, since time embarked. Identified as the need of the hour, the four necessities in language or commonly known as the four skills- Reading, writing, listening and speaking plays a vital role in any language learning quest… The four skills are the pinnacles of language which will take you to greater heights. They are separate yet bound together with an inseparable bond.

Teachers should set high standards for an ESL classroom. They should work to create the necessary condition for students to learn effectively and reach the desired outcome. For the teaching of English to be successful, the four skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing, should be integrated in an effective way. These skills should be addressed in a way that helps students meet the standards you set for them and develop their communicative competence gradually. This encompasses: Listening and speaking: these two skills are highly interrelated and work simultaneously in real life situations. So, the integration of the two aims at fostering effective oral communication. This integration will assure real-life and purposeful communication. Reading and writing: they form a strong relationship with each other as skills. They are tools for achieving an effective written communication. Students need opportunities to develop their reading and writing skills. Developing students’ competencies in reading and writing requires exposing students to gradually challenging reading materials and writing tasks. The aim is making students read and write effectively.

In fact, the integration of listening and speaking with reading and writing will make learners good listeners, speakers, readers and writers so as to be able to communicate effectively. The mastery of these skills is a gradual process. Teachers, for instance, should expose learners to gradually challenging tasks and material.

When a teacher makes use of activities that have been specially designed to incorporate several language skills simultaneously (such as reading, writing, listening, and writing), they provide their students with situations that allow for well-rounded development and progress in all areas of language learning. Through daily activities, teachers provide learners with opportunities to develop each skill: students listen (to the teacher use the target language, to a song, to one another in a pair activity), speak (pronunciation practice, greetings, dialogue creation or recitation, songs, substitution drills, oral speed reading, role play), read (instructions, written grammar drills, cards for playing games, flashcards) and write (fill-in-the-blank sheets, sentences that describe a feeling, sight or experience, a dialogue script, a journal entry).

Four skills activities in the language classroom serve many valuable purposes: they give learners scaffolded support, opportunities to create, contexts in which to use the language for exchanges of real information, evidence of their own ability (proof of learning) and, most important, confidence.

    Pollution

Thick black smoke curling out of smokestacks, horrible-tasting chemicals in your drinking water, pesticides in your food - these are examples of pollution. Pollution is any contamination of the environment which causes harm to the environment or the inhabitants of the environment. There are many kinds of pollution, and there are many pollutants. Some obvious kinds of pollution are pollution of the air, soil, and water. Some less obvious, or less salient kinds of pollution are radioactive, noise, light pollution, and green-house gasses.

Air pollution can be caused by particles, liquids, or gases that make the air harmful to breathe. There are two main types of air pollution: primary and secondary. Primary pollutants enter the air directly, like smoke from factories and car exhaust. Secondary pollutants are chemicals that mix together to pollute the air, like mixtures of emissions, or waste output, from vehicles and factory smoke that change to form more dangerous pollutants in the air and sunlight.

Soil pollution can be caused by pesticides, leakage..........................chemical tanks, oil spills, and other chemicals..........................get into the soil by dumping or accidental contamination. Soil pollution can also cause water pollution.............................underground water becomes contaminated by coming.............................contact with the polluted soil.

Water pollution can be caused by waste products, sewage, oil spills, and litter in streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans. Some scientists believe that water pollution is the largest cause of death and disease in the world, causing about 14,000 deaths in the world each day.

Radioactive pollution can be caused by leaks or spills of radioactive materials. These materials can come from medical sources, nuclear power plants, or laboratories which handle radioactive materials. Air, soil, and water can be polluted by radioactivity. It can cause damage to animals, both internally and externally, by eating, drinking, or touching it. It can cause birth defects and genetic problems. It can cause certain cancers and other deadly diseases.

Noise pollution can be caused by vehicle, aircraft, and industrial noise. It can also be caused by military or experimental sonar. Noise has health effects on people and animals. In people, it can cause high blood pressure, heart problems, sleep disturbances, and hearing problems. In animals, it can cause communication, reproductive, and navigation problems – they have difficulty finding their direction. Sonar has even caused whales to beach themselves because they respond to the sonar as if it were another whale.

Light pollution can be caused by advertising signs, stadium and city lighting, and other artificial lighting (like the light caused by night traffic). Artificial lighting has health effects on humans and animals. In people, it can cause high blood pressure and affect sleeping and waking rhythms and immunity. It might be a factor in some cancers, such as breast cancer. In animals, it can affect sleeping and waking rhythms, navigation, and reproduction.

In addition, greenhouse gases have caused a warming effect on the earth’s climate. The greenhouse gases are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and ozone. They are naturally–occurring gases in the atmosphere, but human activity has increased their concentration in the atmosphere. For example, the levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere have risen due to the burning of fossil fuels. The effect is a rise in global temperatures. The higher temperatures cause the melting of glaciers, a rise in the water level of oceans, and the disruption of both land and marine life, including that of humans. Although carbon dioxide is necessary for plants to survive, it is also considered to be a kind of pollution because high levels of carbon dioxide have caused the oceans to become more acidic.

It is not possible for anyone to predict the exact timing and effects of global pollution and global climate change brought about by pollution. There is general agreement by scientists that the global climate will continue to change, that the intensity of weather effects will continue to increase, and that some species of animals will become extinct. There is also general agreement, or consensus, that humans need to take steps to reduce emissions of waste products and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, make adaptations to the changes that are occurring, and figure out ways of reversing the trends of pollution and global warming.

Dogs will eat almost anything—cats, not so much. Here’s why.

Why are cats such picky eaters when dogs seem willing to wolf down just about anything they encounter? It’s a question many pet parents likely ask themselves while __________ their feline friend to swallow a pill or prying another slobbery piece of mulch from their puppy’s mouth.

There’s still a lot scientists don’t know about animal taste preferences. But, thanks to a small but growing body of research, researchers are starting to unravel some of the mysteries around our four-legged friends’ flavor fancies. Here’s what we know so far.

Accidentally drop a cupcake on the ground and your dog will probably scarf it down in one bite. Your cat, on the other hand, may turn up her nose. One possible reason for their ____________ behaviors? Cats can’t taste sweetness.

Since they couldn’t just ask cats directly, researchers figured this out by analyzing their DNA. House cats, tigers, and cheetahs have a “broken” version of the gene Tas1r2, which works with another gene, Tas1r3, to enable sweetness detection. Though Tas1r3 appears to function perfectly fine in cats, Tas1r2 is an “unexpressed pseudogene” that’s missing 247 letters. Without them, Tas1r2 does not produce a crucial protein needed to form a receptor for sweetness on cats’ taste buds.

To take the study a step further, they gave 25 felines the choice between a bowl of plain water and one that’d been spiked with molecules that provide umami flavor. As ___________, the cats strongly preferred the umami water, and more specifically, water containing umami compounds present in tuna. That may help explain why felines love the saltwater fish so much.

New generation of Indigenous activists battle to save the Amazon

Campaigners in Brazil use drones to document work of self-defence teams trying to stop environmental destruction caused by illegal mining

Batista, who belongs to South America's Macuxi people, is part of a new generation of Indigenous journalists helping chronicle an age-old battle against outside aggression. For centuries, non-Indigenous writers and reporters have flocked to the rainforest region to tell their version of that ancestral fight for survival. Now, a growing cohort of Indigenous communicators are telling their own stories, providing first-hand dispatches from some of the Amazon's most inaccessible and under-reported corners.

"It's dangerous work and we suffer a lot when we're out in the field," said Batista, one of about 26,000 inhabitants of Raposa Serra do Sol, Brazil's second most populous Indigenous territory. "But it really gives me strength because I'm showing the reality of our lives to the world."

"It's my job to monitor the territory: to see who's coming in and who is leaving, to find areas being invaded, and to defend the territory because we cannot live without it," said Batista, who was trained by a local Indigenous association, the Conselho Indígena de Roraima, as part of an initiative called Rede Wakywai, which means "our news" in the local Wapichana language.
