    Sleep Survey

According to recent medical research, sleeping more than nine hours or less than six hours a night can __________ your life expectancy. Those who are likely to live longest are people who regularly get between seven and eight hours a night. A survey of 1,000 adults conducted by the Better Sleep Council (BSC) found that few people understand the important role sleep plays in normal daily brain functions, and many people actually reduce their brain power by getting too little sleep.

One in three adults admit that they do not get enough sleep, and lack of sleep is leaving millions of people without the energy to work as hard as they should. Although a large number of people say that they need to be mentally alert in their work, over half of the people interviewed say that they sleep just under seven hours a night during the week. On the other hand, most of the people interviewed say that they sleep more than seven hours a night on weekends. This suggests that a significant number of people try to catch up on their sleep on weekends instead of getting enough sleep during the week, when they need it most.

According to this survey, nearly half of the population believes that the brain rests when the body sleeps. In fact, the opposite is true. Sleep allows the brain to go to work, filing and storing the day’s events. “Most people incorrectly think the brain is resting or recuperating during sleep. Actually, some parts of the brain are more active when you’re asleep,” confirms Dr. Mark Mahowald, director of the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center. “Your brain is like a cluttered desktop at the end of the day. At night, when you’re asleep and no more information can be put on the desk, or in your brain, your brain can then file away the information.”

From a more pedagogical standpoint, suggestions have been made to use certain activities for activating readers’ existing schema or at least providing learners with crucial information about the topic they will be reading (Ajideh, 2003; Brown, 2001; Chastain, 1988; Chen & Graves, 1995; Grabe, 1991). The use of reading activities can promote strategic reading behaviors by students at pre-, while-, and postreading (Alyousef, 2006; Ur, 1996) stages. In turn, reading activities can promote interpretation of the text through the interaction between the reader and the text (Wallace, 1992) and thus play a vital role in schema activation in order to comprehend and interpret the text better (Chen & Graves, 1995; Grabe & Stoller, 2002). Despite the fairly well-documented impact of background knowledge on reading comprehension and a host of activities suggested, it still remains to be explored whether, or to what extent, the lack of cultural knowledge can be compensated through the use of reading activities. Erten and Karakaş (2007) noted that our knowledge on the value of these activities mainly stems from pedagogical recommendations or personal experiences and often lacks scientific scrutiny. Only a handful of studies have investigated which is more effective, using a particular activity on the same text (e.g., Karakaş, 2005) or making use of different activities on the same text with different groups of students (e.g., Chen & Graves, 1995; Erten & Karakaş, 2007; Shen, 2004).

After years of inattention, the whole world has just awaken to what is happening in the Amazon. “Save the rain forest” is the cry of conservationists, politicians, and rock stars. The movement has already sparked a confrontation between rich industrials nations, which are new converts to the environmental cause, and the poorer nations of the Third World which consider outside interference as an assault on their sovereignty. Scientists think that destruction of the Amazon could lead to climatic chaos. Because of the huge volume of clouds it generates, the Amazon system plays a major role in the way the sun’s heat is distributed around the globe. Any disturbance of this process could produce unpredictable effects. As an American Senator has just said: “The devastation is unbelievable. It’s one of the great tragedies of all history”. Why We're Obsessed With the

    Mind-Blowing ChatGPT AI Chatbot

    Stephen Shankland

    Feb. 19, 2023 5:00 a.m. PT

This artificial intelligence bot can answer questions, write essays, summarize documents and write software. But deep down, it doesn't know what's true.

Even if you aren't into artificial intelligence, it's time to pay attention to ChatGPT, because this one is a big deal.

The tool, from a power player in artificial intelligence called OpenAI, lets you type natural-language prompts. ChatGPT then offers conversational, if somewhat stilted, responses. The bot remembers the thread of your dialogue, using previous questions and answers to inform its next responses. It derives its answers from huge volumes of information on the internet.

ChatGPT is a big deal. The tool seems pretty knowledgeable in areas where there's good training data for it to learn from. It's not omniscient or smart enough to replace all humans yet, but it can be creative, and its answers can sound downright authoritative. A few days after its launch, more than a million people were trying out ChatGPT.

But be careful, OpenAI warns. ChatGPT has all kinds of potential pitfalls, some easy to spot and some more subtle.

“It's a mistake to be relying on it for anything important right now,” OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman tweeted. “We have lots of work to do on robustness and truthfulness.” […]

    What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot system that OpenAI released in November to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can accomplish. You can ask it countless questions and often will get an answer that's useful.

For example, you can ask it encyclopedia questions like, “Explain Newton's laws of motion.” You can tell it, "Write me a poem," and when it does, say, "Now make it more exciting." You ask it to write a computer program that'll show you all the different ways you can arrange the letters of a word.

Here's the catch: ChatGPT doesn't exactly know anything. It's an AI that's trained to recognize patterns in vast swaths of text harvested from the internet, then further trained with human assistance to deliver more useful, better dialog. The answers you get may sound plausible and even authoritative, but they might well be entirely wrong, as OpenAI warns.

    TEXT:

10 Ways We Can Build Better Rapport With Our Students Tyler Harm

    October 6, 2019

As a teacher it is easy to get caught up in the curriculum, planning, and grading. We sometimes lose sight that a human connection could be the main reason that a student chooses to come to school each day. Try to make meaningful conversations with students. This is a mistake that I sometimes make and try to avoid if possible. I often have students come into my room for lunch or come and hang out in the morning before school starts. During these times of the day, I’m also working on paperwork, grading, and setting up the classroom for the day. Try and model active listening skills with your students. I have often been writing an email at the same time as I have been talking with a student and I find that I am not really paying attention to what they are telling me.

Many students enjoy coming to their teacher to talk about different things, while other students are harder to reach. Students will share exciting things from the weekend, tragedies that happened to their family, or problems they’re having with their friends. They trust you enough to come to you with the good things and troubles that they’re having. Take the time even though you won’t be able to finish your work right then to listen to them. They will appreciate it and see you as a trusting adult who cares for them. If you must get your email or lesson plan typed up, kindly ask the student to wait a minute or so until you finish what you are doing so you can give them your full attention. Below are ten other ways that we can build better rapport with our students, especially those that are hard to reach.

10 Ways to Build Positive Relationships with Students

In order to build a positive rapport with a student, you have to intentionally carve out time for the student. If you are busily running around the room and trying to talk with the student it, you will not be fully engaged and it will come off as insincere. Once you have the time carved out for your specific student(s), here are some ways to build rapport with your students:

    • Smile– Be genuinely happy to see your students each day. This could be the thing that brightens their day!

    • Be Respectful- Give students time and space to problem solve issues if needed. Let them know you are there for them when they are ready to talk.

    • Know their Hobbies and Interests- Take some time, even just in passing to talk about what your students like to do for fun. Share what you like too!

    • Play a Game– Go out for recess or spend a few minutes playing games with students. They love having their teachers playing with them!

    • Lunch with a Student- Invite a student or two in for lunch sometime. This provides a quiet time to get to know your students better.

    • Greet Students at the Door- You can tell a lot by a student’s body language when they enter the room. Stand outside of the door and shake their hand in the morning or at each class period.

    • Attend Student’s Activities– Get a sports or performance schedule from your students who are in extra-curricular activities. They love it when you come to an event!

    • Look for the Positive in Your Students- Try to find one or two affirmations to say to your students each day. The ones who really struggle will need to be built up daily!

    • Be Sincere- When you are talking with students, put down your computer, and be an active, sincere listener. Students will know when you are not being genuine.

    • Believe in Your Students- Tell them, especially when things are hard, that you believe in them. Show them as well by being there for your students when they need extra support with an assignment or a listening ear for them during a tough time.

We all want to have great relationships with our students. Sometimes the busyness of our work and teaching can be a barrier to building rapport with our students. As I return to school this week, I will work harder at becoming more intentional with more of my students. Building up your students and taking time to be there for them will bring a lifetime of great results.

How space technology is bringing green wins for transport

1 Space technology is developing fast, and, with

every advance, it is becoming more accessible to

    industry. Today, satellite communications (satcoms)

and space-based data are underpinning new ways

of operating that boost both sustainability and

profitability. Some projects are still in the planning

stages, offering great promise for the future. However,

others are already delivering practical results.

2 The benefits of space technology broadly fall

into two categories: connectivity that can reach into

situations where terrestrial technologies struggle to

deliver and the deep, unique insights delivered by

Earth Observation (EO) data. Both depend on access

to satellite networks, particularly medium earth orbit

(MEO) and low earth orbit (LEO) satellites that offer

low-latency connectivity and frequently updated data.

Right now, the satellite supplier market is booming,

driving down the cost of access to satellites. Suppliers

are increasingly tailoring their services to emerging

customer needs and the potential applications are

incredible – as a look at the transportation sector

    shows.

3 Satellite technology is a critical part of

revolutionizing connectivity on trains. The Satellites

for Digitalization of Railways (SODOR) project will

provide low latency, highly reliable connectivity that,

combined with monitoring sensors, will mean near real-

time data guides operational decisions. This insight

will help trains run more efficiently with fewer delays

for passengers. Launching this year, SODOR will help

operators reduce emissions by using the network

    more efficiently, allowing preventative maintenance

and extending the lifetime of some existing trains. It

will also make rail travel more attractive and help shift

more passengers from road to rail (that typically emits

even less CO2 per passenger than electric cars do).

4 Satellite data and communications will also play

a fundamental role in shaping a sustainable future

for road vehicles. Right now, the transport sector

contributes around 14% of the UK’s greenhouse gas

emissions, of which 91% is from road vehicles – and

    this needs to change.

5 A future where Electric Vehicles (EV) dominate

will need a smart infrastructure to monitor and control

the electricity network, managing highly variable

supply and demand, as well as a large network of

EV charging points. EO data will be critical in future

forecasting models for wind and solar production, to

help manage a consistent flow of green energy.

6 Satellite communications will also be pivotal. As

more wind and solar installations join the electricity

network – often in remote locations – satcoms will

step in to deliver highly reliable connectivity where 4G

struggles to reach. It will underpin a growing network

of EV charging points, connecting each point to the

internet for operational management purposes, for

billing and access app functionality and for the users’

comfort, they may access the system wherever they

    are.

7 Satellite technology will increasingly be a part of

the vehicles themselves, particularly when automated

driving becomes more mainstream. It will be essential

for every vehicle to have continuous connectivity to

support real-time software patches, map updates

    and inter-vehicle communications. Already, satellites

provide regular software updates to vehicles and

enhanced safety through an in-car emergency call

    service.

8 At our company, we have been deeply embedded

in the space engineering for more than 40 years – and

we continue to be involved with the state-of-the-art

technologies and use cases. We have a strong track

record of translating these advances into practical

benefits for our customers that make sense on both a

    business and a sustainability level.

From the fragment in the second paragraph of the text “Right now, the satellite supplier market is booming, driving down the cost of access to satellites”, one can infer that the more access to the satellite supplier market is feasible,

The Internet has changed people lives, speech styles, jobs, communication, and education. Modern cell phones, digital cameras, and other new devices have affected the way we use language. People communicate with each other through electronic mail, instant messaging, and texts. They might “chat” in different virtual rooms, join interesting online groups, comment on news websites, and write in blogs and “wikis.” These practices construct new forms of “discourse, identity, authorship, and language” (Kern, 2006, p.183). The English language is widely used on the Internet and is considered to be the most common Internet language. English language has many new expressions and abbreviations that appear on the Internet. These Internet expressions have grown in popularity. People use several terms to describe them, such as texting language, textese, Internet language, digital language, and chatting language. Such expressions build up a new variety of English that is very common among Internet users, bloggers, chatters, gamers, and teenagers in general. It is considered an informal written language, much like slang, which is an informal spoken variety of the language. This paper uses the term “texting language” (TL) to mean all these kinds of messages, expressions, and abbreviations.
