Dogs will eat almost anything—cats, not so much. Here’s why.

Why are cats such picky eaters when dogs seem willing to wolf down just about anything they encounter? It’s a question many pet parents likely ask themselves while __________ their feline friend to swallow a pill or prying another slobbery piece of mulch from their puppy’s mouth.

There’s still a lot scientists don’t know about animal taste preferences. But, thanks to a small but growing body of research, researchers are starting to unravel some of the mysteries around our four-legged friends’ flavor fancies. Here’s what we know so far.

Accidentally drop a cupcake on the ground and your dog will probably scarf it down in one bite. Your cat, on the other hand, may turn up her nose. One possible reason for their ____________ behaviors? Cats can’t taste sweetness.

Since they couldn’t just ask cats directly, researchers figured this out by analyzing their DNA. House cats, tigers, and cheetahs have a “broken” version of the gene Tas1r2, which works with another gene, Tas1r3, to enable sweetness detection. Though Tas1r3 appears to function perfectly fine in cats, Tas1r2 is an “unexpressed pseudogene” that’s missing 247 letters. Without them, Tas1r2 does not produce a crucial protein needed to form a receptor for sweetness on cats’ taste buds.

To take the study a step further, they gave 25 felines the choice between a bowl of plain water and one that’d been spiked with molecules that provide umami flavor. As ___________, the cats strongly preferred the umami water, and more specifically, water containing umami compounds present in tuna. That may help explain why felines love the saltwater fish so much.

In hopeful sign for the US, flu vaccine shows strong protection against hospitalization in South America, CDC report shows

    By Deidre McPhillips, CNN

Published 1:49 PM EDT, Fri September 8, 2023

Early data from South America shows that the flu vaccine has cut the risk of hospitalization in half this year, a hopeful sign that the vaccine will provide a similar level of protection in the United States as the country heads into its own respiratory virus season.

The Southern Hemisphere typically experiences its flu season a few months earlier than the United States, and trends from that region can help the US prepare for the fall and winter.

This year, mid-season flu vaccine data from five countries – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay – shows that vaccination has reduced the risk of hospitalization by 52%, according to a report published Friday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The data are based on about 3,000 patients who were hospitalized between late March and early July. People who had gotten the shot at least two weeks before the onset of symptoms were considered to be vaccinated, and the analysis focused on certain high-risk groups who were prioritized in the vaccination campaigns, including children, people with preexisting conditions and older adults.

So far, the specific virus strains that have been detected in US this year have shown a similar pattern to those that were identified in South America. While these patterns are not yet certain, they offer an “encouraging outlook for vaccine protection” in the Northern Hemisphere, the researchers wrote in the new report.

Annual flu shots are available now and the CDC recommends them for everyone 6 months of age and older in September and October, especially including very young children, people with preexisting health conditions, pregnant people and older adults.

The agency is rolling out new ads it hopes will increase confidence in the vaccines with a clear, straightforward message: “The flu vaccine won’t keep a person from getting sick, but it will tame that infection, taking it from “Wild to Mild” — the tagline for the new campaign.

    (Adapted from www.cnn.com)

In the sentence “The flu vaccine won’t keep a person from getting sick, but it will tame that infection” the word won’t is the contraction of ‘will not’ and a modal verb. Select the option that states this modal verb meaning and a word that could replace it without changing the context, respectively:

    Texto 5

    Tempo sugerido: 2 minutos

    Orientações:

    1. Cumprimente a turma em inglês e apresente o slide com o objetivo da aula.

    2. Explique aos estudantes: Today we’re going to learn how to select specific information in a text.

    1. Após cumprimentar a classe e explicar o objetivo da aula, diga aos estudantes: Now, I want you to figure out the subject of the text we’re going to read today! I will show some pictures to help you identify it, ok?

    2. Projete o slide acima para os alunos. Peça que eles observem as imagens e identifiquem o que há de comum nelas. Fale assim: Please, look at these images carefully. What do they have in common? What attitudes do they show? O esperado é que os alunos respondam com frases incompletas ou palavras soltas. Isso porque estamos partindo do pressuposto que a palavra “citizenship” ainda não faça parte do vocabulário deles.

    3. Assim que os alunos chegarem a essa conclusão, diga: “Yes, you’ve got it! Cidadania in English is CITIZENSHIP” e apresente o próximo slide com a escrita da palavra em inglês.

Read the following excerpt and answer the following questions.

Today's grandparents are joining their grandchildren on social media, but the different generations' online habits couldn't be more different. In the UK the over-55s are joining Facebook in increasing numbers, meaning that they will soon be the site's second biggest user group, with 3.5 million users aged 55–64 and 2.9 million over-65s.

Sheila, aged 59, says, 'I joined to see what my grandchildren are doing, as my daughter posts videos and photos of them. It's a much better way to see what they're doing than waiting for letters and photos in the post. That's how we did it when I was a child, but I think I'm lucky I get to see so much more of their lives than my grandparents did.'

Ironically, Sheila's grandchildren are less likely to use Facebook themselves. Children under 17 in the UK are leaving the site – only 2.2 million users are under 17 – but they're not going far from their smartphones. Chloe, aged 15, even sleeps with her phone. 'It's my alarm clock so I have to,' she says. 'I look at it before I go to sleep and as soon as I wake up.'

Unlike her grandmother's generation, Chloe's age group is spending so much time on their phones at home that they are missing out on spending time with their friends in real life. Sheila, on the other hand, has made contact with old friends from school she hasn't heard from in forty years. 'We use Facebook to arrange to meet all over the country,' she says. 'It's changed my social life completely.'

Teenagers might have their parents to thank for their smartphone and social media addiction as their parents were the early adopters of the smartphone. Peter, 38 and father of two teenagers, reports that he used to be on his phone or laptop constantly. 'I was always connected and I felt like I was always working,' he says. 'How could I tell my kids to get off their phones if I was always in front of a screen myself?' So, in the evenings and at weekends, he takes his SIM card out of his smartphone and puts it into an old-style mobile phone that can only make calls and send text messages. 'I'm not completely cut off from the world in case of emergencies, but the important thing is I'm setting a better example to my kids and spending more quality time with them.'

Is it only a matter of time until the generation above and below Peter catches up with the new trend for a less digital life?

The intrigue behind the Bermuda Triangle

On a sunny day nearly 80 years ago, five Navy planes took off from their base in Florida on a _________ training mission, known as Flight 19. Neither the planes nor the crew were ever seen again. Thus was a legend born. The Bermuda Triangle is an area roughly bounded by Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico. No one keeps statistics, but in the last century, numerous ships and planes have simply vanished without a trace within the imaginary triangle.

The disappearances have been attributed to the machinations of enormous sea monsters, giant squid, or extra-terrestrials. Alien abductions, the existence of a mysterious third dimension created by unknown beings, and ocean flatulence—the ocean suddenly spewing great quantities of trapped methane—have all been suggested as culprits.

The reality, say many, is far more prosaic. They argue that a sometimes treacherous Mother Nature, human error, shoddy __________________ or design, and just plain bad luck can explain the many disappearances.

"The region is highly traveled and has been a busy crossroads since the early days of European exploration," said John Reilly, a historian with the U.S. Naval Historical Foundation. "To say quite a few ships and airplanes have gone down there is like saying there are an ________ lot of car accidents on the New Jersey Turnpike—surprise, surprise."

    TEXTO:

    The Importance of Four Skills

Any language is difficult and easy. Language serves many purposes.Absence of language is mere dearth of communication. The role that language plays is immense, since time embarked. Identified as the need of the hour, the four necessities in language or commonly known as the four skills- Reading, writing, listening and speaking plays a vital role in any language learning quest… The four skills are the pinnacles of language which will take you to greater heights. They are separate yet bound together with an inseparable bond.

Teachers should set high standards for an ESL classroom. They should work to create the necessary condition for students to learn effectively and reach the desired outcome. For the teaching of English to be successful, the four skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing, should be integrated in an effective way. These skills should be addressed in a way that helps students meet the standards you set for them and develop their communicative competence gradually. This encompasses: Listening and speaking: these two skills are highly interrelated and work simultaneously in real life situations. So, the integration of the two aims at fostering effective oral communication. This integration will assure real-life and purposeful communication. Reading and writing: they form a strong relationship with each other as skills. They are tools for achieving an effective written communication. Students need opportunities to develop their reading and writing skills. Developing students’ competencies in reading and writing requires exposing students to gradually challenging reading materials and writing tasks. The aim is making students read and write effectively.

In fact, the integration of listening and speaking with reading and writing will make learners good listeners, speakers, readers and writers so as to be able to communicate effectively. The mastery of these skills is a gradual process. Teachers, for instance, should expose learners to gradually challenging tasks and material.

When a teacher makes use of activities that have been specially designed to incorporate several language skills simultaneously (such as reading, writing, listening, and writing), they provide their students with situations that allow for well-rounded development and progress in all areas of language learning. Through daily activities, teachers provide learners with opportunities to develop each skill: students listen (to the teacher use the target language, to a song, to one another in a pair activity), speak (pronunciation practice, greetings, dialogue creation or recitation, songs, substitution drills, oral speed reading, role play), read (instructions, written grammar drills, cards for playing games, flashcards) and write (fill-in-the-blank sheets, sentences that describe a feeling, sight or experience, a dialogue script, a journal entry).

Four skills activities in the language classroom serve many valuable purposes: they give learners scaffolded support, opportunities to create, contexts in which to use the language for exchanges of real information, evidence of their own ability (proof of learning) and, most important, confidence.

City lawmakers in Brazil have enacted what appears to be the nation’s first legislation written entirely by artificial intelligence (AI) — even if they didn’t know it at the time.

The experimental ordinance was passed in October in the southern city of Porto Alegre and city councilman Ramiro Rosário revealed that it was written by a chatbot, sparking objections and raising questions about the role of artificial intelligence in public policy.

Rosário told The Associated Press that he asked OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT to craft a proposal to prevent the city from charging taxpayers to replace water consumption meters if they are stolen. He then presented it to his 35 peers on the council without making a single change or even letting them know about its unprecedented origin. The 36-member council approved it unanimously and the ordinance went into effect on Nov. 23.

The arrival of ChatGPT on the marketplace just a year ago has sparked a global debate on the impacts of potentially revolutionary AI-powered chatbots. While some see it as a promising tool, it has also caused concerns and anxiety about the unintended or undesired impacts of a machine handling tasks currently performed by humans.

Porto Alegre, with a population of 1.3 million, is the second-largest city in Brazil’s south. The city’s council president, Hamilton Sossmeier, found out that Rosário had enlisted ChatGPT to write the proposal when the councilman bragged about the achievement on social media. Sossmeier initially told local media he thought it was a “dangerous precedent.”

The AI large language models that power chatbots like ChatGPT work by repeatedly trying to guess the next word in a sentence and are prone to making up false information, a phenomenon sometimes called hallucination.

All chatbots sometimes introduce false information when summarizing a document, ranging from about 3% of the time for the most advanced GPT model to a rate of about 27% for one of Google’s models, according to recently published research by the tech company Vectara.

In an article published on the website of Harvard Law School’s Center of Legal Profession earlier this year, Andrew Perlman, wrote that ChatGPT “is a machine learning system, it may not have the same level of understanding and judgment as a human lawyer when it comes to interpreting legal principles and precedent. This could lead to problems in situations where a more in-depth legal analysis is required”.

There was no such transparency for Rosário’s proposal in Porto Alegre. Sossmeier said Rosário did not inform fellow council members that ChatGPT had written the proposal.

Rosário told the AP his objective was also to spark a debate. He said he entered a 49-word prompt into ChatGPT and it returned the full draft proposal within seconds, including justifications.

And the council president, who initially decried the method, already appears to have been swayed. “I changed my mind,” Sossmeier said. “I started to read more in depth and saw that, unfortunately or fortunately, this is going to be a trend.”

A Forced Kiss, and a Reckoning With Sexism in Spain1

In the wake of a nonconsensual kiss pressed on Jennifer Hermoso, a star player of the Spanish women's soccer team, by the president of Spain’s soccer federation, Luis Rubiales, a significant national conversation has been sparked in Spain about feminism, equality, and abuse. The incident highlights the clash between deeply ingrained traditions of machismo and Spain's more recent progressivism on genderrelated matters.

The unwarranted kiss by Rubiales on Hermoso's lips has become symbolic of the generational and cultural divide between traditional machismo and the more modern push for gender equality. The incident has led to widespread condemnation, even within conservative circles. This event has been referred to by some as Spain’s version of the #MeToo movement.

Spanish prosecutors have initiated a preliminary investigation into whether Rubiales could be charged with a sexual aggression crime. The Royal Spanish Football Federation, led by Rubiales, has faced calls for his resignation due to the controversy.

In a politically charged environment, where the far-right's anti-gender identity stance was rejected in recent elections, Spain's feminist movement has gained momentum. Leading politicians, cultural figures, and voices within soccer culture have expressed support for Hermoso and condemned Rubiales, highlighting Spain's shift towards gender equality.

The incident has triggered a broader reflection on the country's entrenched soccer culture and sexism, prompting discussions about the need for change. Many see this moment as an opportunity for Spain to address and transform the deeply ingrained sexism within maledominated institutions.

1 Nowadays, occupational therapists have access

to many technological features that aid patients in

    overcoming their physical limitations.

4 While many traditional OT methods are still

highly effective, using technology can help with patient

engagement, especially in the case of young children.

7 For example, a child whose treatment includes drawing

or coloring can use an iPad, instead of crayons, messy

markers and coloring books to practice these skills.

10 Elderly patients can use virtual assistants, like

    Text CG2A2

A new study on physical activity that involved more than half a million participants over age 40 found that modest exercise increases life expectancy regardless of weight.

Contrary to most of the attention given to obesity as the crucial risk factor for health, the study found that an active lifestyle increased life expectancy to a greater extent than a lower body mass index (BMI), in general. In fact, participants who were active but class 1 obese lived an average of 3.1 years longer than those who were at a normal weight but didn’t engage in physical activity. This is in-line with reports from earlier this year that excessive sitting is unhealthy and that reducing excessive sitting to less than 3 hours a day alone can improve longevity by 2.0 years.

The article states low level of physical activity of moderate to vigorous intensity would confer a 1.8-year gain in life expectancy after age 40, compared with no activity. A low level of physical activity is defined as up to 75 minutes of fast walking per week.

A consequence of this study is that it calls into question the reliance on BMI to assess fitness. That isn’t to suggest that BMI isn’t a factor, but that what we’ve heard for years in the media that being overweight is “bad” for you while exercise is “good” is a flawed message. A better message would be: Regular exercise is essential to longevity and a lower BMI helps too — do the first and the other will likely follow.
