Instructions: Answer questions 36 to 40 based on the following text.

‘Alien’ minerals never found on Earth identified in meteorite

    1. While generations of camel herders of El Ali town in Somalia had known about the
    2. meteorite, which is the ninth largest ever found, it wasn’t scientifically documented until a few
    3. years ago. The oddly smooth rock caught the eye of prospectors, and when they hit it with a
    4. hammer, a metallic tone resounded. They suspected it was an iron meteorite — an object from
    5. space largely made of iron and nickel, many of which are believed to have come from the cores
    6. of smashed asteroids or planetesimals, similar to our own planet's metallic center.
    7. The prospectors sent small samples of ___ meteorite to scientists for confirmation and
    8. further analysis, and ___ piece fell into ___ hands of Chris Herd, curator of the meteorite
    9. collection at the University of Alberta. While studying the slice of rock, he noticed several crystals
    10. with unusual compositions. Later analysis, including a comparison to synthetically created
    11. minerals, confirmed his hunch: the composition and structure of the minerals had never been
    12. seen before in nature.
    13. Herd named one mineral elaliite, after the meteorite itself, and the second elkinstantonite,
    14. after Lindy Elkins-Tanton, a planetary scientist at Arizona State University. Chi Ma, a meteorite
    15. mineralogist at the California Institute of Technology who has previously discovered dozens of
    16. new minerals, identified the third mineral, calling it Olsenite to honor the late Edward Olsen, a
    17. former curator at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.
    18. Our planet has roughly 5,800 minerals, while only about 480 have been found in
    19. meteorites. Many of those meteoritic minerals are truly alien — some 30 percent don't form
    20. naturally on Earth. Studying the mineralogy of meteorites is "armchair solar system exploration,
    21. in a lot of ways", Herd says. "We're trying to constrain the variety of conditions that have existed
    22. within different planetary bodies".

Why Climate Change Could Mean More Delayed Flights

No one enjoys a delayed flight, but as our weather gets warmer, we can expect more of them.

That's according to experts, who say that the heat of the summer might cause more delays.

Bloomberg looked at US data for flight delays at airports in Chicago and New York from June to August in 2022 and from January to March in 2023. It found that there were more delayed flights in the summer months at both airports.

When the temperature rises above 39 degrees Celsius, things get very difficult for airlines, Bijan Vasigh, a professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the US, told Bloomberg.

The air is thinner when it gets hot and that makes it harder for planes to take off. In thinner air there is not as much lift, so more power is needed.

When they need more power, it helps to have a lighter airplane.

That might mean pilots have to make last-minute decisions to reduce the weight on board by dumping fuel, passengers or baggage — meaning the plane will probably be delayed.

The problem gets worse at airports that are at a higher altitude where the air is already thinner, and at airports with short runways, since planes need more space to get up to a high speed.

But thin air is not the only problem. Smoke from wildfires — that have been happening all around the world in the summer of 2023 —can also cause flights to be delayed and canceled. Of course, the summer is also a busy time when millions of people fly, and weather is not the only cause of delays — but our hotter climate doesn't seem to be helping.

How space technology is bringing green wins for transport

1 Space technology is developing fast, and, with

every advance, it is becoming more accessible to

    industry. Today, satellite communications (satcoms)

and space-based data are underpinning new ways

of operating that boost both sustainability and

profitability. Some projects are still in the planning

stages, offering great promise for the future. However,

others are already delivering practical results.

2 The benefits of space technology broadly fall

into two categories: connectivity that can reach into

situations where terrestrial technologies struggle to

deliver and the deep, unique insights delivered by

Earth Observation (EO) data. Both depend on access

to satellite networks, particularly medium earth orbit

(MEO) and low earth orbit (LEO) satellites that offer

low-latency connectivity and frequently updated data.

Right now, the satellite supplier market is booming,

driving down the cost of access to satellites. Suppliers

are increasingly tailoring their services to emerging

customer needs and the potential applications are

incredible – as a look at the transportation sector

    shows.

3 Satellite technology is a critical part of

revolutionizing connectivity on trains. The Satellites

for Digitalization of Railways (SODOR) project will

provide low latency, highly reliable connectivity that,

combined with monitoring sensors, will mean near real-

time data guides operational decisions. This insight

will help trains run more efficiently with fewer delays

for passengers. Launching this year, SODOR will help

operators reduce emissions by using the network

    more efficiently, allowing preventative maintenance

and extending the lifetime of some existing trains. It

will also make rail travel more attractive and help shift

more passengers from road to rail (that typically emits

even less CO2 per passenger than electric cars do).

4 Satellite data and communications will also play

a fundamental role in shaping a sustainable future

for road vehicles. Right now, the transport sector

contributes around 14% of the UK’s greenhouse gas

emissions, of which 91% is from road vehicles – and

    this needs to change.

5 A future where Electric Vehicles (EV) dominate

will need a smart infrastructure to monitor and control

the electricity network, managing highly variable

supply and demand, as well as a large network of

EV charging points. EO data will be critical in future

forecasting models for wind and solar production, to

help manage a consistent flow of green energy.

6 Satellite communications will also be pivotal. As

more wind and solar installations join the electricity

network – often in remote locations – satcoms will

step in to deliver highly reliable connectivity where 4G

struggles to reach. It will underpin a growing network

of EV charging points, connecting each point to the

internet for operational management purposes, for

billing and access app functionality and for the users’

comfort, they may access the system wherever they

    are.

7 Satellite technology will increasingly be a part of

the vehicles themselves, particularly when automated

driving becomes more mainstream. It will be essential

for every vehicle to have continuous connectivity to

support real-time software patches, map updates

    and inter-vehicle communications. Already, satellites

provide regular software updates to vehicles and

enhanced safety through an in-car emergency call

    service.

8 At our company, we have been deeply embedded

in the space engineering for more than 40 years – and

we continue to be involved with the state-of-the-art

technologies and use cases. We have a strong track

record of translating these advances into practical

benefits for our customers that make sense on both a

    business and a sustainability level.

Throughout the 20th century the study and practice of public administration was essentially realistic and normative rather than theoretical and value free. This may explain why public administration, unlike some social sciences, developed without much concern about a general theory. Not until the mid-20th century and the dissemination of the German sociologist Max Weber’s theory of bureaucracy1 was there much interest in a theory of public administration. Most subsequent bureaucratic theory, however, was addressed to the private sector, and there was little effort to relate organizational to political theory.

A key principle of public administration has been economy and efficiency – that is, the provision of public services at the minimum cost. This has usually been the stated objective of administrative reform. Despite growing concern about other kinds of values – such as responsiveness to public needs, justice and equal treatment, and citizen involvement in government decisions – efficiency continues to be a major goal.

In its concern with efficiency and improvement, public administration has focused frequently on questions of formal organization. It is generally held that administrative problems can be at least partly corrected by reorganization. Many organizational principles originated with the military, a few from private business. They include, for example: (i) arranging departments, ministries, and agencies on the basis of common or closely related purposes, (ii) grouping like activities in single units and (iii) equating responsibility with authority.

How to use technology to help teachers be better and to

    make life better for teachers

Teachers matter enormously to student learning. Teachers deliver academic knowledge. Teachers impart model socioemotional skills. Good teachers boost students’ long-term life outcomes. Teachers can inspire (and in another demonstration of their importance, in some cases, sadly, teachers can disappoint or even abuse).

Yet teachers, often lionized and occasionally villainized, are people. They enter the profession for a wide range of reasons, they have their own families to feed, and – like most professionals – they respond to incentives, support, accountability, and the quality of the management around them. In short, they are part of a system. [...]

Top 10 Effective Methods of Teaching English

    Pallavi Pradeep Purbey

    Dec 5, 2022 |

In the history of teaching languages, there are many teaching approaches and techniques, with some being more well-known and successful than others. Language teaching methods are reliant on and affected by various hypothesis of language learning. The historical backdrop of language teaching advances in multiple ways.

There are a lot of methods of English teaching, and we've listed a few that are very famous and active methods.

    Grammar-cum-Translation Method

The name itself explains the functionality of the grammar-cumtranslation method. The strategy of teaching English in grammar orientation depends on a ton of interpretation. The technique is the conventional or 'old style' method of learning a language. A few nations approach this teaching style. The fundamental thought behind this strategy is that the students become familiar with all grammar rules to translate various sentences easily.

Many teachers recognize this technique as incapable since it does not include the spoken form of the language, and communication skills are ignored. Furthermore, it does not allow the learners to think directly in the target language. Thus, it hinders the creation of a direct link between thoughts and expression. Consequently, this technique doesn't improve the student's communicative ability in the language but only builds strong language writing skills.

    The Direct Method

The Audio method is also known as the direct method, which involves thinking and speaking in English. Here the communication between the teacher and the student is strictly in English, and the student is barred from using their native language. This way, the student can get a stronghold on the accent and fluency, the frequency of grammatical errors in this would be less.

This method is widely used as it helps the students learn the English language in a way a native English speaker would speak like and not the orthodox textbook way.

    The Audio-Lingual Method

The audio-lingual method is also recognized as the Army Method. During the first world war, the American Armed forces started escalating oral courses known as the 'Military particular Training Program' (ASTP). Instructive organisations later received it as an audio-lingual method.

The striking highlights of the audio-lingual method are:

    1. Language teaching starts with communication; the material is educated before it is offered in composed structure.
    2. The objective language is the study hall's main language; the student's primary language isn't utilised.
    3. The teacher is the role model for the student; student-tostudent interaction happens in chain drills.

The army method is identified with the natural method. The most significant difference between the audio-lingual method and the natural method is its focal point of teaching. The natural method focuses on the learning of vocabulary, while the audio-lingual practice focuses on communication.

    Suggestopedia

Suggestopedia is a behaviourist theory developed by Georgi Lozanov, the Bulgarian psychotherapist in the 1970s. The method involves using the environment, music, decoratives, etc., for learning the language.

It depends a lot on the atmosphere and the physical environmental factors of the class. When teachers prepare to utilize the Suggestopedia method, there's a great deal of craftsmanship and music included. Each suggestopedia exercise is divided into three unique stages: Deciphering, Concert Session and Elaboration.

    The Silent Way

The silent way leans mainly on the student's self-sufficiency. The teacher demonstrates only as a facilitator attempting to urge students to be more efficient in their learning. The fundamental of these lines of teaching is for the teacher to state practically nothing so that students can assume responsibility for their education.

This learning method follows a basic schedule, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation continually drilled and reused for support. The teacher assesses their students through their mistakes, and they may never set a conventional test as students are urged to address their language blunders.

    Total Physical Response

Total Physical Response, also called TPR, is a methodology that follows 'learning by doing. For example, apprentices will learn English through a series of activities, “Close the door”, “Stand up”, “Open your book”, and “Stroll to the window and open it.” With TPR, the most significant aptitude is aural perception, and everything else will be regular.

    Community Language Learning

Community language learning is a language-teaching approach in which students cooperate to create what parts of a language they might want to learn. It depends on the counselling approach. CLL is most likely one of the English teaching methods where the student feels the most secure. There's an extraordinary accentuation on the relationship and bond between the student and teacher. In contrast to a ton of different methods and ways to deal with teaching English as a Second Language, a great deal of the native language is utilized for translation purposes.

    Communicative Language Teaching

The thought behind this methodology is to assist students with conveying all the more successfully and effectively in sensible circumstances that they may wind up. Therefore, this teaching includes concentrating on important capacities like thanking, complaining, suggesting, inviting, and requesting directions to give some examples.

Communicative Language Teaching has the following qualities:

    1. The point is to make the student achieve communicative capability, for example, utilizing language precisely and appropriately.
    2. Communicative Language Teaching underscores the elements of a language rather than the principles.
    3. Utilize techniques to energize student cooperation in typical habitats- information gap exercises, role-play, group, and pair work.

    Task-Based Learning

Task-based language teaching is also called task-based instruction. The principal point of this way to deal with learning is task finishing. Typically, the teacher sets relevant and exciting tasks. Then, students are required to draw on their information in English to finish the job with as few mistakes as could be expected under the circumstances. Such assignments can incorporate visiting a specialist, directing a meeting, or calling customer care for help.

    Lexical Approach

The lexical approach in language teaching looks to create a proposition for a schedule plan and language teaching established on a view of language in which lexis assumes a focal job.

The Lexical approach depends on computer studies that have recently distinguished the most customarily utilized words. This approach in teaching centres around vocabulary is securing and teaching lexical lumps arranged by their recurrence and use. Teachers of the Lexical Approach place an extraordinary accentuation on bona fide materials and practical situations for increasingly important learning.
