    Interactive Lecture:

Small Changes for Improved Engagement and Learning

Traditionally, undergraduate education has been predominately lecture-based instruction and passive lecturing continues to be the most widely used instructional strategy. However, educational research over the past decades has shown that students retain more course content when active learning techniques are correctly implemented. Furthermore, evidence shows that active learning lessens learning and achievement gaps for historically marginalized students.

One method for starting the shift to active learning is the use of interactive lectures, those that incorporate short activities that give students opportunities to engage with the materials just covered in class. The main advantages of interactive lectures for instructors are the ease of implementation and the variety of activities that can be explored and incorporated into a course. Students benefit through increased engagement, learning, and long-term retention of course ideas, topics, and materials (Ernst and Colthorpe 2007, Revell and Wainwright 2009, Miller et al. 2013, Hadie et al. 2018).

So, how do you create an interactive lecture?

The preparation for an interactive lecture begins with revisiting the student learning objectives. Student learning objectives are key to determining which topics are essential to the course and aids in attending to these ideas, materials, and topics for lectures.

Once you are clear on the learning objective(s), review the topic content to determine which aspects of the lecture are key points or required topics and which can be eliminated or covered using methods such as textbook readings, introductory videos, homework assignments etc.

Finally, determine the smallest units of content that can be given and remain coherent. For each small section of information, reframe the content to answer a question. Use awareness-raising questions for structuring lectures; this will allow many strategies to be employed to increase student engagement through analysis and discussion. You could use one same question and have students brainstorm possible answers in pairs or small groups. The method helps students determine their prior knowledge and has them think critically about the topic.

Many assumptions of a communicative orientation towards language teaching need questioning in a global context. Ozóg (1989) discusses the idea of the ‘information gap’, which is supposed to induce students to speak. ‘Are we as Europeans’, he asks, ‘not making a cultural assumption that speakers the world over are uneasy in silence and that they have an overwhelming desire to fill gaps which occur in natural discourse?’ (p.399). Silence is a salient feature of conversation in the Malay world, he points out, a feature that has also been noted in Japan and a number of other cultures.

Indeed, the whole question of requiring others to speak needs to be questioned in terms of both cultural and gender differences. The point here is not to exoticize some notion of cultural difference, but rather to suggest that language is a cultural practice, that both language and thinking about language are always located in very particular social, cultural and political contexts. How language (including silence, paralanguage, and so on) is used, therefore, differs extensively from one context to another, and thus any approach to language teaching based on one particular view of language may be completely inapplicable in another context. If particular language teaching practices (advertised and exported as the best, newest and most scientific) support certain views of language, then such practices clearly present a particular cultural politics and make the English language classroom a site of struggle over different ways of thinking about and dealing with language.

I’m a boss and I say we should work less

    David Goldman

If there’s one thing the pandemic taught us all it’s that work is tiring whether we’re doing it from the office or from home. Unproductive jobs led millions of people to drop out of the workforce altogether and a record number of Americans have quit their jobs because of burnout, low pay, childcare and eldercare. To entice people back into the job market, employers have increased payment. _______, inflation has wiped that away and it hasn’t worked. So here’s a crazy solution: let people work less. I know, it sounds radical, but workers are really into the idea and they are more productive. For the past eight weeks, thousands of people in the United Kindgom have tested a four-day schedule - with no cut to their pay. Unsurprisingly, some workers have said they feel happier, healthier and are doing better in their jobs. In 1930, the economist John Maynard Keynes predicted we would be working 15-hour weeks by 2030, with hours in the office reducing over time. _______, a 9 to 5, Monday to Friday shift became the norm and over time it became hard for businesses and workers to think differently. You can present your boss all the data you want, but it’s unlikely you’re going to have success convincing management that the way to increase productivity and solve the labor shortage is to give everyone Friday off - forever.

Researchers in the United Kingdom have developed an autonomous, snakelike robot designed to slither down human lungs into places that are difficult for medical professionals to reach. The new “magnetic tentacle robot,” which is composed of magnetic discs and is roughly 2 millimeters and less than a-tenth-of-an-inch long, could eventually have its use expanded to help doctors more thoroughly investigate other organs, such as the human heart, kidney or pancreas.

The robot is still 5 to 10 years away from showing up in a clinical setting, researchers said, but the device comes on the heels of a fleet of other robotic innovations allowing doctors the ability to better scan a patient’s lungs for cancerous tissue. They are designed to ease a task doctors have long struggled with: reaching the inner recesses of the human body, for diagnostic and treatment purposes, without causing damage or using invasive procedures.

Doctors now use a medical device called a bronchoscope to examine a person’s lungs and airways. Normally 3.5 to 4 millimeters in diameter, the device enters through a patient’s nose or mouth and goes into the lung’s airways, called bronchioles. However, the bronchoscope’s width and rigidity limits how deep doctors can venture down a patient’s lungs in search of cancerous or other problematic tissues. Parts of the lungs are left unexamined, potentially causing harm.

The robot from the United Kingdom would be the first to not require manual guidance from a physician. Magnets mounted on robotic arms outside the patient would be used to help guide the device into the lungs. Once inserted into a patient, the magnets would help the robot move down a patient’s lungs autonomously, following a map of the patient’s lung network, which would be mapped out before the procedure. Once at its desired location, the robot could ultimately have the capability to take a tissue sample or deliver a clinical treatment. Depending on where a tumor is, this may be the only way to reach it successfully.

“I can imagine a future,” says Nitish V. Thakor, a professor of biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University, “where a full CAT scan is done of the lungs, and the surgeon sits down on a computer and lays out this navigation path of this kind of a snake robot and says: ‘Go get it.’ ” Despite that, Thakor said any autonomous robot would face an uphill climb being accepted by clinicians, as “people who do the clinical practice … guard their business very carefully until they get trained.”

When the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao opened in northern Spain 25 years ago, architect Frank Gehry’s curvy titanium-clad building was itself as much a part of the attraction for many art lovers as the exhibits inside.

As Spain opens the long-awaited Royal Collections Gallery in Madrid next week, its sleek new eight-story building, perched on an iconic hillside next to the Royal Palace, may also steal some of the attention from the Old Masters on display. Spanish architects Emilio Tuñon and Luis Mansilla won the 2017 American Architecture Prize and a dozen other awards for this design, built with white concrete, granite and oak and featuring hundreds of windows overlooking the leafy gardens below the Royal Palace and the expansive Casa de Campo park beyond.

Multimodality in the English language classroom:

    A systematic review of literature

Literacy in the 21st century is now no longer regarded simply as the ability to use a language competently in a mono-cultural setting. Literacy today involves students knowing how to navigate across an increasingly complex communication landscape and to negotiate a range of contexts and patterns of intercultural meanings as well as the prevalence of multimodal texts.

Contemporary communication environment is characterised by multimodal meaning-making, that is the “multiplicities of media and modes”, as well as “increasing local diversity and global connectedness” (New London Group, 1996, p. 62) which necessitates a shift in the pedagogical approaches that are adopted by teachers. This is especially so in the digital age where a sole focus on language in literacy is no longer sufficient for the new workplace given that a revised sense of ‘competence’ is required. The recognition of social diversity also demands pedagogical approaches that engage with the transcultural and multicultural classroom. Issues of the day such as fake news and social justice concerns also need to be addressed in the literacy classroom.

Multimodality focuses on understanding how semiotic resources (visual, gestural, spatial, linguistic, and others) work and are organised. Multimodality in education adopts an expanded view of literacy to include the range of multimodal communicative practices which young people are involved in today's digital age. Multimodal pedagogies refer to the ways in which the teacher can design learning experiences using a range of multimodal resources. It involves teachers making design choices in the ways in which the curriculum content is expressed, arranged, and sequenced multimodally. Multimodal pedagogies also involve designing opportunities for students to explore and perform ideas and identities using a range of meaning-making resources. The teaching and learning activities often involve drawing from the students’ funds of knowledge and their lifeworld. With multimodal pedagogies, teachers orchestrate the learning process by weaving together a series of knowledge representations into a cohesive tapestry and in so doing make apt selection of meaning-making resources to design the students’ learning experience.

REAL ESTATE AGENTS SAY THEY CAN’T IMAGINE WORKING

    WITHOUT CHATGPT NOW

By Samantha Murphy Kelly, CNN Business - Updated 1:47 PM EST, Sat January 28, 2023

If you came across a four bedroom, 3.5 bathroom home listed for sale recently on a quiet cul-de-sac in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, you might not think twice about the online listing. It included typical real estate descriptions like “ideal for entertaining” and “ample space for relaxation.”

But JJ Johannes, the realtor for the home, created the description in less than five seconds by typing a few keywords into ChatGPT, a viral new AI chatbot tool that can generate elaborate responses to user prompts. It’s a task, he said, that would otherwise have taken him an hour or more to write on his own.

“It saved me so much time,” Johannes told CNN, noting he made a few tweaks and edits to ChatGPT’s work before publishing it. “It’s not perfect but it was a great starting point. My background is in technology and writing something eloquent takes time. This made it so much easier.”

Johannes is among the real estate agents experimenting with ChatGPT since it was released publicly in late November. Some residential and commercial agents told CNN it has already changed the way they work, from writing listings and social media posts to drafting legal documents. It could also be used to automate repetitive tasks such as answering frequently asked questions and doing complex calculations. [...]

The Growing Sport of Stand-Up Paddling

    1. Stand-up paddle boarding is growing more and more popular these days. It is becoming the
    2. easy, and fun way to go and play while on the water. With nothing but minimum equipment, you
    3. can go and paddle anywhere from on a lake, a river, or the ocean. And because you are standing
    4. up, you get to see the entire view of what is around you, as well as everything on the horizon.
    5. It is also a full-body exercise routine and is becoming more popular as a cross-training activity
    6. used by snowboarders, skiers, and other athletes.
    7. You really do not need a whole lot of gear. Your biggest investment will be the board itself.
    8. Each board is sized differently and is based on the weight and experience of the paddler.
    9. Beginners usually start with a flatter, wider board that offers more stability. The more
    10. experienced paddler usually goes for the narrower, lighter board. Next would be your paddles,
    11. which are made with an angle in the shaft to achieve maximum efficiency. Your paddle should
    12. be approximately 6 to 8 inches above your height. Besides sunglasses and sunscreen, you can
    13. wear anything as long as it is clothing that will move well when you are wet. Also remember that
    14. the Coast Guard ____ paddleboards as vessels, so you are required to wear a flotation device
    15. when you are paddling on navigable waters.
    16. Choose ideal conditions to start out on when first learning the sport. Calm, flat water with
    17. no buoys and boats is a good idea. It is far easier to start by kneeling on the board than trying
    18. to stand upright on it. To help with balance while standing, keep your knees slightly bent, and
    19. your feet as parallel as possible, approximately hip-width apart, and centered as much as
    20. possible between the rails. Use your hips to balance; keep your shoulders and head upright and
    21. steady, and try to look level with the horizon, resisting the temptation to look down at your feet.
    22. Once you get your forward momentum going, your stability will increase also. This may take a
    23. little while to be able to do consistently, but when you build up your leg muscles, your core, and
    24. your fitness level, you will have an absolute blast doing stand-up paddle boarding.

How On-line Gamers are Solving Science’s

    Biggest Problems

On paper, gamers and scientists make a bizarre union. But in reality, their two worlds aren’t leagues apart: both involve solving problems within a given set of rules. Genetic analysis, for instance, is about finding sequences and patterns among seemingly random clusters of data. Frame the analysis as a pattern-spotting game that looks like Candy Crush, and, while aligning patterns and scoring points, players can also be hunting for mutations that cause cancer, Alzheimer’s disease or diabetes.

“Our brains are geared up to recognise patterns”, says Erinma Ochu, a neuroscientist at the University of Manchester, explaining why scientists are turning to gamers for help, “and we do it better than computers. This is a new way of working for scientists, but as long as they learn how to trust game developers to do what they do best — make great games — then they can have thousands of people from all around the world working on their data”.

    How many people speak English?

With 375 million native speakers and more than 1.2 billion total speakers, English is the most widely spoken language in the world and has therefore become a lingua franca for international business.

As it is spoken in very different parts of the world, the English language has become influenced by social, political and cultural aspects, resulting in a language with loads of local variants.

Despite the fact that English is an official language in over 60 countries around the world, there are only 6 countries where it is actually spoken as a native language by the majority of the population.

Sometimes collectively referred to as the Anglosphere, these countries are also home to the most widely accepted variants of the English language, (though there are also significant numbers of native speakers in several other countries such as South Africa, Singapore and Nigeria, as well as many Caribbean countries).

    Excerto 2:

Archaeological Areas of Pompei, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata

(1º§) The World Heritage property includes three different archaeological areas: the ancient towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum together with the Villa of the Mysteries (to the west of Pompeii) and the Villa of the Papyri (to the west of Herculaneum), and the Villa A (Villa of Poppaea) and Villa B (Villa of Lucius Crassius Tertius) in Torre Annunziata. The vast expanse of the commercial town of Pompeii contrasts with the smaller but better-preserved remains of the smaller Herculaneum, while Villa A in Torre Annunziata gives a vivid impression of the opulent lifestyle enjoyed by the wealthier citizens of the early Roman Empire.

(2º§) When Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, it engulfed the two flourishing Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as the many wealthy countryside villas in the area. Pompeii was buried largely by a thick layer of volcanic ash and lapilli and Herculaneum disappeared under pyroclastic surges and flows. These sites have been progressively excavated and made accessible to the public since the mid-18th century. However, in the case of Herculaneum large areas of the ancient town still lie under the modern town and have only been explored and surveyed by the network of 18th-century tunnels that drew the attention of Grand Tour visitors, the basis still today for visiting the Herculaneum's underground ancient theatre. These areas are mostly not currently included in the World Heritage property.

(3º§) Pompeii, with its well-preserved buildings in an excavated area of 44 ha, is the only archaeological site in the world that provides a complete picture of an ancient Roman city. The main forum is flanked by a number of imposing public buildings, such as the Capitolium, the Basilica and temples and within the city there are also many public bath complexes, two theatres and an amphitheatre.

(4º§) In Herculaneum several impressive public buildings are well preserved, including a spacious palaestra accessed through a monumental gateway, two sets of public baths, one of which (Central Thermae) is monumental and vividly decorated, the College of the Priests of Augustus, and a theatre of standard form. The Villa of the Papyri, outside the city walls, is an opulent establishment. The town is also noteworthy for the completeness of its shops, still containing equipment such as enormous wine jars.

(5º§) Herculaneum's urban districts and seafront display a higher level of preservation with noteworthy conservation of upper floors thanks to the pyroclastic material that buried the town. Organic matter was often carbonized by the high temperatures and exceptionally preserved finds include everyday objects such as foodstuffs, architectural elements and wooden furniture.

(6º§) Both Pompeii and Herculaneum are renowned for their remarkable series of residential and commercial buildings, built along well-paved streets. The earliest is the atrium house, entirely inward-looking with a courtyard at its centre: the House of the Surgeon at Pompeii is a good example. Under Hellenistic influences, this type of house was enlarged and decorated with columns and arcades and equipped with large representative rooms. In its highest form, this type of Roman house, known from towns all over the Empire, developed into a veritable mansion, richly decorated and with many rooms, of which the House of the Faun and the House of the Chaste Lovers are outstanding examples.

(7º§) The suburban villas across the Vesuvian area are perhaps even more exceptional in terms of the scale of their buildings and grounds, as well as their lavish decorations. The Villa of the Mysteries is an enormous residence just outside Pompeii's city walls, developed from a modest house built in the 3rd century BC, named from the remarkable wall paintings in the triclinium, which depict the initiation rites ('mysteries') of the cult of Dionysus.

(8º§) The two villas in Torre Annunziata are both extraordinary examples of suburban buildings in the countryside of Pompeii. The villa A, so-called "of Poppaea", is a huge maritime residence built in the middle of the 1st century BCE, enlarged during the Imperial period and under restoration at the moment of the eruption. It is especially well known for its magnificent and well-preserved wall paintings, one of the most important examples of Roman painting with their superb illusionistic frescos of doors, colonnades and garden views. On the other hand, villa B is an excellent example of villa rustica provided with rooms and spaces designated for market activities such as storage of amphoras and trading of locally produced foodstuffs, especially wine.

(9º§) There were many changes to these buildings over time in response to changing circumstances of the owners; these include repairs and adjustments that were a response to the seismic events that led up to the AD 79 eruption and reflect a community living with changing environmental and economic conditions.

(10º§) A special feature of Pompeii is the wealth of graffiti on its walls. An election was imminent at the time of the eruption, and there are many political slogans scrawled on walls, as well as others of a more personal nature, often defamatory. At Herculaneum, the volcanic deposits preserved hundreds of wax tablets, some of which conserve legal documents, and more than 1,800 papyri scrolls containing Greek philosophical texts were found at the Villa of the Papyri.

(11º§) The diverse range of literary sources available in Pompeii and Herculaneum provides a picture of the final decades of these ancient cities and the image of socially complex and dynamic communities, representing exceptional evidence of typical ways of life in Roman society in the first century AD and the importance of texts in political and private life.

(12º§) Other important sources of archaeological evidence are the human remains of those who died in the eruption. Pompeii witnessed an early archaeological experiment when plaster was poured into voids found in the volcanic material and which allowed casts to be made of the forms of the human and animal victims and other organic material. At Herculaneum, on the other hand, about 300 skeletons were discovered along the ancient shoreline. The study of these significant samples of victims from the towns provides insight into their health, lifestyles and death and a chance to compare the two data sets. The casts themselves are important resources as they contain both skeletal remains and evidence of 19th- and 20th-century archaeological practice.

(13º§) Another important legacy of the twentieth century was the presentation of Herculaneum to the public as an 'open-air museum', perhaps Europe's first, with buildings reconstructed based on archaeological evidence and displays of original objects within the archaeological site. This concept of 'open-air museum' had already been adopted in some buildings in Pompeii, as a medium to communicate the meaning of ancient spaces, at the end of the 19th century.

(14º§) The impressive remains of the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum and their associated villas, destroyed and yet preserved by Mount Vesuvius, provide a complete and vivid picture of society and daily life at a specific moment in the past that is unparalleled elsewhere. The rediscovery and history of these places as archaeological sites has captured the collective imagination century after century, shaping archaeological, art historical, conservation and interpretation practices in Europe and beyond.

    Marine Reptiles

Many millions of years ago, long after the great reptiles had colonized the land, some of them decided to return to the sea. Today, reptiles are not the most common residents of the coral reef, but they are definitely among the most beautiful. Perhaps the most well-known reptiles in the sea are the turtles. There are many different species of sea turtle, ranging in size from only 2 feet to the real giants at over 6 feet in length. Sea turtles lay their eggs on land. They can be seen on the beaches late at night digging a deep hole in the sand. The eggs are deposited and covered over. Several months later, the tiny turtles dig their way to the surface and scramble towards the sea. But a turtle's life is not easy. Only one in a thousand will survive the predators and return to the beach one day. Sea turtles were once killed by the thousands for food. Today, even though many face extinctions they continue to be exploited. Their eggs and shells are in constant demand the world over. Another member of the sea reptile family enjoys full protection. The sea snake is the most venomous snake on Earth. Several sea snake species can be found swimming the world's coral reefs. Some of them are spectacularly colored. Divers are weary of this animal, but the sea snake is timid and will not attach unless provoked. Below is a list of some of the more common reptiles found on the reef.

    TEXT III

Why We All Need a Friendship Like Wednesday and Enid’s

    Enid and Wednesday

    Source Netflix

We’re obsessed with the pastel-goth1 duo for more than just aesthetic2 . Here’s a couple of reasons why we love Wednesday and Enid’s unexpected friendship!

    A ____________________________

When they first meet, Enid and Wednesday don’t get off3 on the best foot. Enid is loud and bright and energetic – everything Wednesday hates. Or at least, thinks she hates. Wednesday, who tells herself that she doesn’t need anyone else (especially someone as vibrant as Enid) is determined to push her away. But Enid, who sees a slight sign of softness in Wednesday when hearing her sad scorpion story, isn’t really demotivated.

    B____________________________

Wednesday and Enid don’t try to change each other. There is an acceptance of one another’s differences that is so refreshing! Even after they win the Poe Cup4 competition, Enid doesn’t force Wednesday to spend time with the group, but just makes the offer of companionship gently.

Similarly, Wednesday doesn’t try to get Enid to wear all black or change her persona or identity to be Wednesday’s friend. Instead, she lets Enid express herself however5 she wants, even if it gives Wednesday a massive headache!

    C____________________________

Understanding the limits your friends have is a lifelong lesson that not many people learn early on. When they first meet, Enid quickly notices Wednesday’s peculiarities – including that she’s not a hugger. And while Enid tries to, once or twice, for the most part, she is OK with it. Similar to the way they don’t try to change each other, Enid doesn’t try to blame6 Wednesday over it either!

    D____________________________

Maybe the most emotional scene in the final episode is when Enid returns to Nevermore, and Wednesday accepts to hug7 her back. Even though touch makes her uncomfortable!

Friendships aren’t always easy. They require hard work, communication, and enthusiasm to forgive and learn from past mistakes. Wednesday and Enid are no different! They show that even if you might be very different, as long as you care for and respect each other, you can find a lifelong friend in the most diverse people.

Text I

    Adding ethics to public finance

Evolutionary moral psychologists point the way to garnering broader support for fiscal policies

Policy decisions on taxation and public expenditures intrinsically reflect moral choices. How much of your hard-earned money is it fair for the state to collect through taxes? Should the rich pay more? Should the state provide basic public services such as education and health care for free to all citizens? And so on.

Economists and public finance practitioners have traditionally focused on economic efficiency. When considering distributional issues, they have generally steered clear of moral considerations, perhaps fearing these could be seen as subjective. However, recent work by evolutionary moral psychologists suggests that policies can be better designed and muster broader support if policymakers consider the full range of moral perspectives on public finance. A few pioneering empirical applications of this approach in the field of economics have shown promise.

For the most part, economists have customarily analyzed redistribution in a way that requires users to provide their own preferences with regard to inequality: Tell economists how much you care about inequality, and they can tell you how much redistribution is appropriate through the tax and benefit system. People (or families or households) have usually been considered as individuals, and the only relevant characteristics for these exercises have been their incomes, wealth, or spending potential.

There are two — understandable but not fully satisfactory — reasons for this approach. First, economists often wish to be viewed as objective social scientists. Second, most public finance scholars have been educated in a tradition steeped in values of societies that are WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic). In this context, individuals are at the center of the analysis, and morality is fundamentally about the golden rule — treat other people the way that you would want them to treat you, regardless of who those people are. These are crucial but ultimately insufficient perspectives on how humans make moral choices.

Evolutionary moral psychologists during the past couple of decades have shown that, faced with a moral dilemma, humans decide quickly what seems right or wrong based on instinct and later justify their decision through more deliberate reasoning. Based on evidence presented by these researchers, our instincts in the moral domain evolved as a way of fostering cooperation within a group, to help ensure survival. This modern perspective harks back to two moral philosophers of the Scottish Enlightenment — David Hume and Adam Smith — who noted that sentiments are integral to people’s views on right and wrong. But most later philosophers in the Western tradition sought to base morality on reason alone.

Moral psychologists have recently shown that many people draw on moral perspectives that go well beyond the golden rule. Community, authority, divinity, purity, loyalty, and sanctity are important considerations not only in many non-Western countries, but also among politically influential segments of the population in advanced economies, as emphasized by proponents of moral foundations theory.

Regardless of whether one agrees with those broader moral perspectives, familiarity with them makes it easier to understand the underlying motivations for various groups’ positions in debates on public policies. Such understanding may help in the design of policies that can muster support from a wide range of groups with differing moral values.
