Learning strategies are defined as “specific actions, behaviors, steps, or techniques—such as seeking out conversation partners, or giving one self-encouragement to tackle a difficult language task—used by students to enhance their own learning. When the learner consciously chooses strategies that suit his or her learning style and the L2 task at hand, these strategies become a useful toolkit for active, conscious, and purposeful self-regulation of learning. Learning strategies can be classified into six types; the compensatory strategies, for example, are those that help the learner make up for missing knowledge.

A given strategy is neither good nor bad; it is neutral until the context of its use is thoroughly considered. What makes a strategy positive and helpful for a given learner? A strategy is useful if the following conditions are present: (a) the strategy relates to the L2 task at hand; (b) the strategy fits the particular student’s learning style preferences to one degree or another; and (c) the student employs the strategy effectivety and links it with other relevant strategies. Strategies that fulfill these conditions “make learning easier, faster, more enjoyable, more self-directed, more effective, and more transferable to new situations” (Oxford 1990, p. 8). Learning strategies can also enable students to become more independent and lifelong learners.

DIET COKE BREAK? Should you stop drinking Diet Coke? All you need to know about the aspartame scandal affecting more than just soda

(1º§)The ingredient aspartame, which gives the drink its sweet touch, is about to be designated as "possibly carcinogenic" by the World Health Organisation, insiders claimed this week. Aspartame is found in a variety of foods and fizzy drinks, including Diet Coke and in the EU, as for all food additives, the presence of aspartame must be indicated on the label either by its name or its E number (E951).

(2º§)Diet Coke has been made popular over the years by deals with celebs including Whitney Houston, Kate Moss, Taylor Swift and even Holly Willoughby. But the argument over whether sugar or sweeteners is better for your health has raged for years and is one of the most debated topics in nutritional science.

(3º§)WHAT'S THE DEAL? Aspartame is a sweetener that's been used for over 30 years in thousands of products to add sweetness to lower calorie and sugar-free products, including drinks, cereal bars and yoghurts.

(4º§)WHY THE FUSS? This week it emerged that the International Agency for Research on Cancer, an arm of the WHO, could declare aspartame a class 2B carcinogen. That means they deem it "possibly carcinogenic to humans". Other products that fall into this category include aloe vera extract, lead and Asian pickled vegetables. There is no denying it is complicated. Here, we take a look at aspartame, its potential dangers and whether or not you should be going cold-turkey on the popular drink. Gunter Kuhnle, professor of nutrition and food science at the University of Reading, tells The Sun: "Aspartame turns into methanol and phenylalanine in the intestinal tract. "Methanol is converted into formaldehyde by the human body, and formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. "This is at least one of the possible mechanisms."

(5º§)WHAT DOES THE SCIENCE SAY? Whether or not sweeteners are linked to cancer has long been studied. One of the most recent studies of 100,000 people in France - showed those who consumed larger quantities of artificial sweeteners, including aspartame, had a slightly higher cancer risk. But Dr Caitlin Hall, chief dietitian and head of clinical research at myota, tells The Sun: "There is some controversy surrounding these studies. "The French study could not prove definitively that aspartame caused the increased cancer risk. More research is needed."

(6º§)WHAT OF OTHER HEALTH RISKS? Only last month, the WHO issued guidelines advising people not to drink sweeteners if they want to lose weight. It said although short-term weight loss may occur, there could be "undesirable effects" in the long term, such as an increased risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Dr Hall says the chemicals produced by sweeteners have been found to "disrupt the delicate balance of bacteria in our gut microbiome" which do "all sorts of amazing things, like strengthening our immune system and keeping our metabolism in check". Registered dietitian Aisling Pigott, a British Dietetic Association spokesperson, says if you're eating "diet" foods to help lose weight, "it's worth making sure these are not displacing fruit, veggies and fibre rich foods too". Other studies have suggested sweeteners could affect male and female fertility, by decreasing sperm motility and affecting the ovaries. Meanwhile people with a rare inherited disease, called phenylketonuria (PKU) cannot safely consume aspartame.

(7º§)SO, SHOULD YOU QUIT DIET COKE NOW? The general consensus is that there is no need to worry. Prof Jones says: "The question is not, 'Does aspartame cause cancer or not,' but 'Does it do so at the level we are exposed to it?' The answer, I think, is no. "Think of it a bit like driving a car; the hazard is that you might get in an accident and be hurt or die but the risk is low enough that most of us don't think it will be an issue." Prof Oliver Jones, professor of chemistry at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, adds: "The amounts of methanol released are lower than found in orange juice, so unlikely an issue."

(8º§)WHAT'S THE RISK? Health experts across the globe have ruled aspartame is safe to consume, if you stick to accepted daily limits. The average Brit could guzzle 15 cans of Diet Coke in a day before exceeding the 40 milligrams of aspartame per kilogram of body weight threshold. In 2013, the European Food Safety Authority, looked at how much formaldehyde is produced from consuming aspartame and had little concern "as the amount was too low", Prof Kuhnle says. "They do not comment on whether higher intakes will cause harm. It is possible that aspartame causes cancer when consumed in amounts much higher than normally consumed." The IARC will review the evidence to determine whether or not to classify aspartame as a hazard. Statistics expert, Prof Kevin McConway from the Open University says: "They assess whether it would ever be capable of presenting a risk, under any circumstances. "Even if the only harmful circumstances are really, really unlikely." Prof Kuhnle adds: "Many things are carcinogens, but in many cases, the exposure to them is too low for this to matter. "The sun can cause cancer, but we can manage the risk." Frances Hunt-Wood, from the International Sweeteners Association, adds: "Aspartame is one of the most thoroughly researched ingredients in history with over 90 food safety agencies across the globe declaring it is safe." Rick Mumford, the deputy chief scientific adviser to the UK's Food Standards Agency, says: "Our view is that the safety of this sweetener has been evaluated by various scientific committees and it is considered safe at current permitted use levels."

    Text 10A2

From a distance, Brazil may look like a linguistically homogeneous country. You can easily challenge this false impression if you travel around its huge territory. You will find Spanish in the borders, with most of its neighbors, as well as nearly 200 indigenous languages from the remaining original inhabitants. Over a quarter of a million deaf people use sign language and a small amount of speakers use learned additional languages, English being the most prevalent one.

The monolinguistic ideology that prevailed in social contexts, such as the school, the media, and trading, has been gradually transformed by globalization. New generations commonly listen to music, watch TV, and browse the internet using languages other than Portuguese. English has become more familiar and is easily seen in urban linguistic landscapes. Children and teenagers have access to video games, music videos, and other contemporary forms of entertainment in which English is the main language available. English has become a means to access information that is widely spread online.

Identical twins go on separate vegan and meat diets to see difference they make to body

In 2021, a set of identical twins took part in an experiment that involved one going vegan while the other consumed meat to see which of these two diets is (1) ___ .The diets are complete polar opposites, but which one is being (2) ______ to your body?

Well, explorers Hugo and Ross Turner decided to put the plant-based and omnivore diets to the test to see which was better - with Hugo ditching meat and dairy and Ross sticking to a diet that included meat, dairy and fish. The twins took part in the Kings College London study over a 12-week period (3) ______ the same number of calories each day as well as carrying out the same gym training.

Hugo admitted that the switch to a plant-based diet hadn't been easy, but he eventually ended up feeling more energetic. "| was on the vegan diet and it really does take a hit on your body. | was now having to eat fruit and nuts and alternatives that didn't have any dairy in them - and so that meant | was eating a lot more wholesome food, which meant that my sugar levels were a lot satiated during the day. | felt like | had more energy.”

On the other hand, Ross' meat-eating journey was a little different. As he said, his gym performance was 'up and down a little bit more”. He added that on some days of the challenge he felt “very energetic' and on others he would have 'huge lulls'.

By the end of the 12-week study, the men found that the differences between the two diets weren't very significant, after all.

The Growing Sport of Stand-Up Paddling

    1. Stand-up paddle boarding is growing more and more popular these days. It is becoming the
    2. easy, and fun way to go and play while on the water. With nothing but minimum equipment, you
    3. can go and paddle anywhere from on a lake, a river, or the ocean. And because you are standing
    4. up, you get to see the entire view of what is around you, as well as everything on the horizon.
    5. It is also a full-body exercise routine and is becoming more popular as a cross-training activity
    6. used by snowboarders, skiers, and other athletes.
    7. You really do not need a whole lot of gear. Your biggest investment will be the board itself.
    8. Each board is sized differently and is based on the weight and experience of the paddler.
    9. Beginners usually start with a flatter, wider board that offers more stability. The more
    10. experienced paddler usually goes for the narrower, lighter board. Next would be your paddles,
    11. which are made with an angle in the shaft to achieve maximum efficiency. Your paddle should
    12. be approximately 6 to 8 inches above your height. Besides sunglasses and sunscreen, you can
    13. wear anything as long as it is clothing that will move well when you are wet. Also remember that
    14. the Coast Guard ____ paddleboards as vessels, so you are required to wear a flotation device
    15. when you are paddling on navigable waters.
    16. Choose ideal conditions to start out on when first learning the sport. Calm, flat water with
    17. no buoys and boats is a good idea. It is far easier to start by kneeling on the board than trying
    18. to stand upright on it. To help with balance while standing, keep your knees slightly bent, and
    19. your feet as parallel as possible, approximately hip-width apart, and centered as much as
    20. possible between the rails. Use your hips to balance; keep your shoulders and head upright and
    21. steady, and try to look level with the horizon, resisting the temptation to look down at your feet.
    22. Once you get your forward momentum going, your stability will increase also. This may take a
    23. little while to be able to do consistently, but when you build up your leg muscles, your core, and
    24. your fitness level, you will have an absolute blast doing stand-up paddle boarding.

Subtle ways parents create anxiety without realizing it

    1. Anxiety isn’t just an adult issue. Clinical research indicates that millions of children struggle
    2. with anxiety symptoms, with a recent analysis putting the number as high as 20.5% of youth
    3. worldwide.
    4. “Sometimes anxiety can be hard to pinpoint as kids can manifest anxiety in different
    5. ways,” said Dr. Khadijah Booth Watkins, associate director of the Clay Center for Young Healthy
    6. Minds at Massachusetts General Hospital. “This can be due to many factors such as the type of
    7. anxiety they’re experiencing, their age, or their language skills”.
    8. While some kids experience physical symptoms like stomachaches, racing heartbeats and
    9. headaches, others exhibit emotional responses like increased tantrums or clinginess. Still, others
    10. become withdrawn and stop participating in activities or engaging with peers.
    11. Even if you do not intend to create anxiety, some common behaviors and comments from
    12. parents can make kids feel anxious.
    13. “We have to remember that our kids are quite attuned to what is going on with us as their
    14. caregivers”, Booth Watkins said. “They are both listening to our words and paying close attention
    15. to our body language. If we are struggling with anxiety ourselves, we have to be deliberate in
    16. managing our stress and distress, and model healthy coping skills and strategies which will be
    17. key in you helping your child manage their anxiety”.
    18. Just as you need to put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others, you should
    19. address your own anxiety struggles to support your children through theirs.
    20. “Anxiety is a normal part of life”, said Keneisha Sinclair-McBride, a clinical psychologist at
    21. Boston Children’s Hospital in Massachusetts. “Everyone needs coping strategies for it. One of the
    22. most important things you can do as a parent is to help your child learn the unique toolkit of

Scientists recently revealed an instinct in women intact and unaffected by age of technology. Glancing through glossy art books, Lee Salk noticed that four times out of five Mary is depicted holding the infant Jesus against her left breast. The Madonna sparked off a series of experiments and observations to determine on which side women hold their babies and why.

First, he determined that modem mothers still tend to hold their baby on the left. Of 255 right-handed mothers, 83% held the baby on the left. And out of 32 left-handed women, 78% held the baby on the left too. As a control, women were watched emerging from supermarkets carrying baby-sized packages and the bundles were held with no side preference. Then, dental patients were given a large rubber ball to hold during treatment. The majority clutched the ball to their left side, even when it interfered with the dentist's activities. This suggested that in times of stress objects are held against the left side.

At that point, an apparently contradictory phenomenon was observed: a large number of mothers who brought their premature babies to a follow-up clinic were seen to hold their babies against their right side. Then, 115 mothers who had been separated from their babies for 24 hours after birth were observed for also holding response. The experimenters presented the baby directly to the midline of the mother's body, and noted how she held the baby. 53% placed the baby on the left and 47%, on the right. And it was also noted that the mothers of the group who had held their baby on the left had already had a baby from which they had not been separated after birth.

The author suggests that "the time immediately after birth is a critical period when the stimulus of holding the baby releases a certain maternal response". That is to say she senses the baby is better off on her left. Left-handed holding enables the baby to hear the heartbeat - a sound associated with security of the womb. In order to discover whether hearing the heart has a beneficial effect on the baby, the sound of a human heartbeat was played to 102 babies in New York nursery for 4 days. On the other hand, a control group of babies was not exposed to heartbeats. The babies in the beat group gained markedly more weight and cried far less than the babies in the control group.

(Taken and adapted from Magazine Spare Rib)

According to the evidences presented in the text, it's correct to say that the time just after birth is important since it is when:

    Text 1

    Green shoppers around the world

If you want to be a responsible consumer, think about not just how much you buy, but also about what’s good for the planet. Green Shoppers United is an international non-profit organization for the promotion of responsible consumerism.

    Labels

Read the labels. Some .................... the ingredients that manufacturers use in products, such as cosmetics or toiletries, can damage the environment. Some ingredients are only used .................... make things prettier, or more colorful, but they might also be harmful. Don’t buy things that contain substances that harm you or the world you live ..................... For example, research shows a potential link .................... the preservatives called parabens, often found in beauty products, and some types of cancer.

    Transport

In today’s global economy, it is easier for companies to buy products and materials where they’re cheap, and transport them over enormous distances to get them to customers. If you can, buy things locally. The local food movement has grown steadily in recent years, and it’s often possible to track down locally grown, or produced, products, rather than those that have been transported long distances. If we stop buying goods that have had to fly over continents to get to us, companies may stop transporting them around unnecessarily. A bargain may cost you less personally, but the real price we pay for it in the long run may turn out to be too high, as jet fuel continues to pollute our environment.

    Environment

Responsible consumers recycle to reduce waste, and its negative impact on our environment. A lot of the plastic packaging we use for food and drink is recyclable, but not all of it. The most common packaging materials are still non-recyclable polyethylene and PVC. Seventy million tons are used every year. Look at the recycling labels carefully. Manufacturers should use recyclable plastics, like PET, wherever possible. Some have also begun using lighter materials, for example, 30% lighter PET plastic for drinks bottles, to reduce the amount of plastic waste. Transporting lighter materials is cheaper, and uses less fuel, too – so the solution may actually benefit everyone.

    Packaging

We’ve all purchased products wrapped in foil, then sealed in a bag, and then put in a box. Why? Write to companies that you think produce wasteful packaging. Ask them to think about what’s really necessary. Make them realize they can save money by using less packaging and, at the same time, help save our planet.

    Consumers

A lot of us expect products these days to be more environmentally friendly. However, research has shown that we don’t want to pay more, and we don’t want to compromise on the quality of products, either. For example, one manufacturer recently had to switch back to less environmental packaging of potato chips, just because customers didn’t like the noise their “green” bags made when they were opened! Think about the effects of your shopping choices. Buy less to save the world, and join our effort to make shopping greener!

Identify the following statements as true ( T ) or false ( F ) according on the text.

( ) In a global economy, companies can buy and sell products in different countries to cut costs and increase profits.

( ) The most common types of plastic packaging are recyclable, but not all plastics are.

( ) Using less packaging means higher costs for companies.

( ) Most consumers prefer to use recyclable packaging and are prepared to compromise.

Text: The importance of the PowerPoint as a classroom resource

(Text adapted from Teachers: 5 Tips for Creating Great PowerPoint Presentations, retrieved)

PowerPoint is a resource developed by Microsoft and released initially in 1990. It is mainly used in professional meeting presentations all over the world.

One of these professions is in educational area: teacher.

PowerPoint presentation is spread among teachers because it is different from lecturing or teaching with a textbook; it is also a way of sharing content with students.

To produce a PowerPoint correctly, teachers need to know how to put the slides together, it can be an effective way of reinforcing content to students so that they are better able to retain it. Otherwise, teachers can print and distribute the PowerPoint presentation or post it online, so students can go back and access it as reference material. However, if it is not put together correctly, a PowerPoint presentation can disengage and make students bored.

To develop PowerPoint presentation is simple and it can also provide a fun time noticed by its characteristics: basic, simple, and not distracting, it can be focused on keywords; for instance, always be sure to include a summary slide of what the presentation is intending to accomplish as well as a table of contents on the different topics that will be covered in the program. The summary slide serves as the main topic and what students should learn after viewing the presentation. Then, at the end of the PowerPoint presentation, teachers should include another summary slide, going over everything that was just covered and, again, highlighting the main point.

    Bottom line

PowerPoint presentations need to have a purpose and the teacher must make sure that the purpose is understood.

    Add pictures

Teachers can reinforce the content with pictures, charts, symbols, and other images. In fact, sometimes it’s better to have more pictures than text in a PowerPoint presentation, because images work to reinforce a content main point.

Teachers typically will just share it with their classes, so they can pull images straight from the Internet. However, for teachers who are making more public and widespread presentations, copyright law needs to be considered (Brazil Information Access Law nº 12.527; Art. 31; paragraph 3; item II).

    Add video

Pictures can help to reinforce a main point or support content, as well as videos. Some research affirm that students enjoy watching videos and retain information from them well, especially if the video is engaging, interesting and informative. Teachers can embed videos right from YouTube or from their desktops to complement a PowerPoint presentation.

    Practice

Nothing turns off a class like a poorly put together PowerPoint presentation, so teachers should always be sure to do a quick rehearsal before they present it to the class. While testing it, make sure all the images load up on the slides, videos load up properly and audio works, too. Also, it’s important for teachers to make sure that there’s a way to connect their computer, or upload anything that’s storing the PowerPoint presentation, to a larger TV monitor or projector screen so the whole class does not have to huddle around a computer screen to view it. Teachers should also make sure that any text can be read and understood. Be sure that the color scheme is good.

    Make it fun

A PowerPoint presentation can be an innovative way of teaching. It’s a more interesting and engaging way for students to learn than the typical lecture. Teachers should embrace this teaching resource and have fun with it. Throw in some jokes, possibly some funny pictures and be sure to get creative with presentations.

As we previously noted, the more students enjoy a lecture, presentation, or activity, the more likely they are to retain information.

Since ChatGPT can engage in conversation and generate essays and graphs that closely resemble those created by humans, educators worry students may use it to cheat. The main reason students cheat is their academic motivation. Sometimes they are just motivated to get a high grade, whereas other times they wish to learn all that they can about a topic. The decision to cheat or not often relates to how academic assignments and tests are constructed and assessed, not on the availability of technological shortcuts.

Research demonstrates that students are more likely to cheat when assignments are designed in ways that encourage them to outperform their classmates. There is less cheating when teachers assign academic tasks that prompt them to work collaboratively and to focus on mastering content instead of getting a good grade.

An important way to boost students’ confidence is to provide them with opportunities to experience success. For example, suppose students are asked to attempt to design a hypothetical vehicle that can use gasoline more efficiently than a traditional car. Students who struggle with the project can use ChatGPT to break down the larger problem into smaller challenges or tasks. ChatGPT might suggest they first develop an overall concept for the vehicle before determining the size and weight of the vehicle and deciding what type of fuel will be used. Teachers could also ask students to compare the steps suggested by ChatGPT with steps that are recommended by other sources.

Text: “How my life has changed”

I used to work on cruise ships as a musician. I traveled a lot! I spent the month before the first lockdown on four continents! I used to get up really early, drive to the airport and fly to a port across the world and get on a ship just to get to work! Then I used to spend between three and fourteen days on the ship. The ships were great. The food was excellent, and the staff was brilliant. The ship stopped at fantastic places, and I often used to spend the afternoon at the beach drinking cocktails or sightseeing. But there were disadvantages too. I often didn’t know anyone on the ship. But the passengers all knew me, and they used to talk to me every time I left my cabin. I didn’t have any privacy. Of course, I had to chat with them politely even when I wasn’t in the mood.

But now, everything has changed. The cruises aren’t running now, and I don’t know when they will run again, and I’ve been in my flat for a year. I never used to spend much time here, and I haven’t spent a whole year in England for over twenty years! But I’ve enjoyed it. I bought a bike last year, and I’ve found some great beach cafes that I never used to know about. I also bought a campervan, and I drove around the coast. I always used to prefer beaches in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean to British beaches. The weather is much better for a start! But I found some beautiful places last year. I could park on the beach in some places and run straight into the sea! They were much less touristy and more peaceful than the places where the cruise ships go.

I’m spending a lot more time alone now. I didn’t use to be alone much when I was working. But since the pandemic started, I have developed new relationships with people whom I didn’t use to know very well. I always used to prefer the company of entertainers and people who like to travel. I used to think that people with normal jobs were boring. But since last year, I’ve got to know some really interesting, strong, kind and caring people! So that’s been really valuable.

Researchers in the United Kingdom have developed an autonomous, snakelike robot designed to slither down human lungs into places that are difficult for medical professionals to reach. The new “magnetic tentacle robot,” which is composed of magnetic discs and is roughly 2 millimeters and less than a-tenth-of-an-inch long, could eventually have its use expanded to help doctors more thoroughly investigate other organs, such as the human heart, kidney or pancreas.

The robot is still 5 to 10 years away from showing up in a clinical setting, researchers said, but the device comes on the heels of a fleet of other robotic innovations allowing doctors the ability to better scan a patient’s lungs for cancerous tissue. They are designed to ease a task doctors have long struggled with: reaching the inner recesses of the human body, for diagnostic and treatment purposes, without causing damage or using invasive procedures.

Doctors now use a medical device called a bronchoscope to examine a person’s lungs and airways. Normally 3.5 to 4 millimeters in diameter, the device enters through a patient’s nose or mouth and goes into the lung’s airways, called bronchioles. However, the bronchoscope’s width and rigidity limits how deep doctors can venture down a patient’s lungs in search of cancerous or other problematic tissues. Parts of the lungs are left unexamined, potentially causing harm.

The robot from the United Kingdom would be the first to not require manual guidance from a physician. Magnets mounted on robotic arms outside the patient would be used to help guide the device into the lungs. Once inserted into a patient, the magnets would help the robot move down a patient’s lungs autonomously, following a map of the patient’s lung network, which would be mapped out before the procedure. Once at its desired location, the robot could ultimately have the capability to take a tissue sample or deliver a clinical treatment. Depending on where a tumor is, this may be the only way to reach it successfully.

“I can imagine a future,” says Nitish V. Thakor, a professor of biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University, “where a full CAT scan is done of the lungs, and the surgeon sits down on a computer and lays out this navigation path of this kind of a snake robot and says: ‘Go get it.’ ” Despite that, Thakor said any autonomous robot would face an uphill climb being accepted by clinicians, as “people who do the clinical practice … guard their business very carefully until they get trained.”
