A recent study on the reading habits of young adults showed that, while they read less traditional literature, they are avid readers of fan fiction, blogs, and social media posts. This highlights the importance of expanding the concept of what constitutes a 'text' and a 'reader' in the English language classroom, and of including non-canonical literature in the curriculum. The teacher's role, in this context, is not to force students to read texts they are not interested in, but to use their own reading practices as a starting point to introduce them to more complex and challenging literary texts, helping them to develop a critical eye and a reflective posture towards all forms of reading. This approach, which is aligned with the concept of literary literacy, recognizes that the formation of the reader is a process that involves a dialogue between the reader and the text, and that the teacher's role is to mediate this dialogue. It is an acknowledgment that the literary canon, while important, is not a fixed and monolithic entity, but a dynamic and ever-changing body of texts that is in constant dialogue with the non-canonical literature and with the social and cultural practices of the readers.
Considering the importance of literary literacy, evaluate the following assertions and the relationship between them.
I. The inclusion of non-canonical literature in the English classroom, such as fan fiction and young adult novels, can be an effective pedagogical strategy to engage students with reading,

II. These texts, by dialoguing with the students' own cultures and interests, serve as a bridge to canonical literature, helping students to develop the skills and attitudes of a competent reader, such as the ability to analyze narrative, characters, and themes, in a more familiar and engaging way, and to recognize the aesthetic and critical value of all literary texts.
