Literary literacy is a process of formation of the reader who, going beyond the simple ability to decode words, is able to analyze, interpret and critically appreciate a literary text. This process involves the understanding of both canonical and non-canonical literature, as both contribute to the formation of a broader and more critical reader. The English teacher has the role of mediating this process, promoting the encounter of students with diverse texts and helping them develop the skills and attitudes of a competent reader, such as the ability to make connections between the text and their own life, the ability to recognize the author's intentions, and the ability to engage in a critical and reflective dialogue with the text. This approach prepares students not only to appreciate literature, but also to use it as a tool for understanding the world and themselves. A teacher who adopts a dogmatic and prescriptive approach to reading may fail to develop this critical and autonomous reader, who is able to find multiple layers of meaning in a text and to engage in a reflective dialogue with it. The challenge lies in creating a pedagogical practice that balances the structured analysis of the text with the students' own subjective experiences and interpretations, and that recognizes the value of all literary texts, regardless of their canonical status.

Considering the concept of **literary literacy**, analyze the following statements and the relationship between them.

I. The reading of a literary text in the English classroom should be a passive process, where the teacher provides the only correct interpretation, and the student's role is to absorb the information,

PORQUE

II. The literary text has a single and fixed meaning that must be discovered by the reader, and the personal interpretations or the reading of the text in a new context are invalid and irrelevant for literary analysis.
