TEXT 1
Gene therapy has been under development for more than 30 years, but several recent major advances point to clinical feasibility, including the development of robust molecular technologies for gene editing in human cells. In parallel, affordable genome sequencing has accelerated our ability to identify the genetic causes of disease. With these advances, we may now expect a widespread use of gene therapy. Already, nearly 1,000 clinical trials testing gene therapies are ongoing, and the rhythm of clinical developments is likely to accelerate. This will bring hope for the cure of many genetic and even non-genetic diseases. (Dr Feng Zhang)

TEXT 2
To fulfil the potential of gene therapy is not as simple as one might think. In order to ensure that all patients have access to this revolutionary treatment, we will need: a) to develop delivery approaches that are practical and widely usable; b) to refine molecular technologies for gene editing; c) to push our understanding of gene function in health and disease forward, and, finally, to engage with all members of society to openly discuss the risks and benefits of gene therapy. Only when these conditions are met, we will be able to envisage the successful genetic treatments of most diseases. (Dr. Shrikant Mali)

Gene therapy has recently been receiving a lot of attention from scientists and researchers. Among these, some are more optimistic, while others are more cautious. Considering Dr Feng Zhang’s and Dr. Shrikant Mali’s views on the future of genre therapy, expressed, respectively, in Text 1 and Text 2, it can be said that
