This teaching method was created by Dr. James J Asher. It is built around the coordination of speech and action; it attempts to teach language through physical (motor) activity. It is considered a communicative method. Here are some of its principles:
- Meaning in the target language can often be conveyed through actions. Memory is activated through learner response.
- Students can initially learn one part of the language rapidly by moving their bodies.
- The imperative is a powerful linguistic device through which the teacher can direct student behavior (Stand up. Sit down. Walk to the door. Stop. etc.).
- Students can learn through observing actions as well as by performing the actions themselves.
