Anyone Can Give a Memorable TED Talk

What are you most afraid of? The answer volunteered by surprising numbers of people is: public
speaking. The mere thought of stepping onto a stage in front of watching eyes is enough to
3----make many of us break into a sweat.
If this sounds like you, you aren’t giving yourself enough credit. Worse, you might be missing a
major opportunity.
6----With enough practice, anyone can be a great presenter. I’ve seen hundreds of people who would
never have called themselves “naturals” give talks that brought down the house, generated
buzz, maybe even changed someone’s life. All of them had one thing in common: They had
9----something worth saying.
Take Richard Turere, a 12-year-old Maasai boy whom I met in Kenya several years back. He
had a smart idea for helping his family protect its cattle from lion attacks at night. He had
12---devised a system of lights, built from scrap-yard parts, that would turn on and off in sequence,
creating the appearance of movement. Richard installed the lights, and – presto! – the lion
attacks stopped. Instead of seeking to kill the lions as they had done before, villagers now
15---installed his “lion lights.”
But could we invite Richard to speak at the annual TED conference? He was painfully shy, his
English was halting, and he struggled to describe
18---his invention coherently. It was hard to imagine
him in front of 1,400 people, slotted alongside
Sergey Brin and Bill Gates.
21---But Richard’s story was so compelling that we
went ahead anyway. We worked with him to frame
his story – to find the right place to begin and to
24---develop a natural narrative sequence. Back home
in Kenya, where he had won a scholarship to one
of country’s best schools, he practiced his talk
27---several times in front of an audience. This helped-
to build his confidence so that his personality--
could shine through.
30---As Richard walked onto the TED stage three years ago, you could tell he was nervous, but that
only made him more engaging. As he spoke, people were hanging on his every word. When he
finished, they stood and cheered.
33---If Richard Turere could overcome his challenges to deliver a blockbuster talk, there is certainly
hope for you. First, ask yourself if you have something worth saying. Focus on identifying the
kind of idea that a listener would receive as a gift.
36---Next, give people a reason to care. You need to make a human connection and stir their
curiosity. Use intriguing, provocative questions to explain why something needs a closer look. If
you can reveal a knowledge gap in their existing world view, they will want to bridge it.
