Read the following passage from Penny Ur´s A Course in Language Teaching: Practice and Theory:

Recalling the characteristics of a good teacher

Most of my trainees recalled their good teachers as in some way ‛pushing’ them to want to give of their best, though there was by no means a consensus on the most common or successful methods.

It is, for example, apparently by no means necessarily true that motivating behaviour on the part of the teacher implies increasing pleasure or enjoyment. People who choose to recall teachers at secondary-school level tended to describe their good teachers as demanding consistently high standards, giving frequent, possibly stressful, tests, punishing slackness and so on. These teachers did, however, in spite of (or because of ?) strictness and uncompromising demands, apparently succeed in conveying to their students a faith in their ability to reach the desired standards, and respect for them as individuals and scholars. A typical comment was something like ‘would never have believed I could do it -- my teacher showed me I could, and pushed me until I got there.’

Others recall their teachers as motivating them by gentler and warmer personal support; these are particularly those who chose to recall primary -- school teachers. ‘I felt she cared about me, and enjoyed teaching me, so I enjoyed learning with her and wanted to do my best.’

Yet another category was those teachers who motivated students by making the tasks and lessons interesting, and thus, eventually, the subject of study as a whole. Interest was aroused not just by careful planning of stimulating topics and tasks, but also by the teacher’s own enthusiasm and eagerness: teachers who are excited about their subject or who simply love teaching seem to communicate their own motivation to their students.

Ur, Penny. A Course in Language Teaching: Practice and Theory. 17. ed. Cambridge University Press, 2009. p. 284. Considering the information present on the excerpt above, it is possible to say that:

I- The majority of Ur’s trainees preferred a teacher who is demanding, providing strenuous activities in English that are likely to push the students to continuously achieve a higher level on learning English.

II- Teachers who have a more tender and amiable approach on their teaching methods are more likely to let the students down, leading to arise on the students a sense of lack of confidence, being emotionally dependent on their peers.

III- There is a unanimity among English teachers claiming that the best approach to make the students internalize grammar concepts and language structure is through giving frequent, possibly stressful, tests regularly.

IV- Some of Ur’s trainees actually tended to appreciate teachers who have a more humane approach towards the students, who are willing to provide individual support in the student’s learning process.

V- It is apparently evident that, when a teacher increases the level of pleasure and enjoyment in the class, a commonsense consequence is the triggering of motivational behaviour towards the students.
