I always measure technology based on its usefulness for my specific tasks. I realize that business companies aim at big profits [...I...] almost all old technology that I have purchased over the years has its place in my work.

I have a first generation Libretto (from about 8 years ago) that is still in use. I recently reloaded Windows 95 onto its 600 meg hard-drive along with Word 2000. Along with a portable Compaq printer, it still serves as the ideal portable office on my wife's professional travels abroad. I have offered her a more advanced machine but she insists that her Libretto has achieved the special status of "appliance". She turns it on and it does exactly what she needs – nothing more – nothing less. Truth be told, I still find its unique pointing device to be very practical and easy to use. I believe that I will use it until it dies.

I even have an old Compaq 386SX (with a 60 meg hard-drive) that served as a word processor for a visiting journalist when his 2000-dollar laptop died suddenly. He wrote up a whole series of articles in notepad.

Although my home office is comprised of up to date hardware and software, I still think that we too readily seek to renew our tools even when they can still serve specific and important purposes.

Thanks
