Text 2A7-III
Friedman (2019) analyzed data from over 180,000 people with disabled family members who participated in Project Implicit, an open-access website where people can test their biases. The majority of family members of disabled people explicitly reported no negative attitudes about disability but, through the implicit association test, evidenced frequent negative attitudes toward disabled people via a large effect-sized implicit preference for nondisabled people. Over 75% of participants showed this implicit preference, which differed as a function of participant demographic characteristics. These findings highlight the importance of even family members of disabled people examining the unconscious assumptions and biases they have about disabled people, as well as of research incorporating both explicit and implicit measures of ableism.
